With gas prices sky rocketing throughout the United States and incomes that never increase, people find themselves asking, "How can I afford this?"

In the past months, it has become painfully obvious that gas prices will never be what they once were. It is also clear that a "gas out" is not the solution either.

Think about it, no one in America buys gas for one day, problem solved? I think not. In order to go without gas for a day, one of two things must occur: One, you must stock up on gas ahead of time which defeats the purpose because the gas companies are still getting the same amount of money that they would've gotten anyway! Two, you could stay home from work that day to avoid buying gas; however, you would lose more money than you saved by not getting paid that day!

So what can we do about the price of gas? Nothing. But, what we can do is monitor how much gasoline we use each week and do our best to save ourselves every penny that we can.

We are all guilty of wasting gas! Here are some major gas wasters: aggressive driving, drive-through windows, unnecessary trips to the grocery store, frequent stops and the list goes on!

To get your gas mileage under control, try incorporating some of the following tips into your day!

Drive the speed limit! This sounds simple enough but a lot of people get impatient and put "the petal to the metal". This can burn quite a bit more gas when it is done day-after-day!

Don't punch the gas petal when you don't have to! If you're going down a hill, let off of the petal and drift. If you're going up a hill, push down on the accelerator slowly.

Carpool to work! The bigger the carpool, the more money everyone saves on gas!

Get rid of the pick-up truck, the SUV or the V8 you're driving and opt for a smaller, more economical vehicle.

Check your tires frequently! Tires that are worn, need to be replaced. Also, check the air pressure in your tires. Tires that don't have the right amount of pressure can burn more gasoline as well.

Drive the interstate when possible. Sitting in town traffic and at stop lights are a huge way of wasting fuel!
