Distance learning has come a long way. In the past ten years with the internet growing by leaps and bounds so has distance learning. I have taken many classes online. I am pursuing a bachelors of science. All with the convenience of distance learning. There are things though that you need to look for when looking for a school to take classes with. If it is to get a degree or just to further your education, you want to make sure you are getting the best deal. Distance learning has so many advantages. Don't let some school take advantage of you.

Make sure the school is accredited. There are a lot of schools out there offering distance learning. Make sure that the one that you choose is accredited by a reliable certifying authority. This may sound a bit confusing as there is no one governing board of accreditation in the United States for distance learning. There are many different accreditations out there that schools can claim. Do your homework and make sure the school you are applying for truly accredited. The Distance Education and Training Council is a one of the larger national accreditation for distance learning.

Make sure they offer what you want. In other words don't settle for less. If you are looking for a bachelors of science don't settle for a certificate program. My reasoning behind this is very simple. The credits from one distance learning school may not be transferable to another. Nor may they transfer to a traditional school.

Make sure you can do the work in the given time frame. Many distance learning schools have set schedules. If you know you can't do a semesters work in nine weeks, don't go with that distance learning class. Many have schedules that are work at your own pace. If you know you need the structure of schedules, don't select this school. It is mainly one of personal preference and knowledge of yourself.

Did You Know?
Many traditional colleges now offer distance learning options.
