ESPN Wants to Know Who is "Now"?

Throughout the month of July ESPN is conducting a 32 man tournament to decide what player is "now", meaning they want to know who is the ultimate sports star. Now I'm not about to make any kind of predictions because this is basically just a popularity contest
and it's pretty easy to guess who is going to win. But I do want to take a look at their field of 32 and ask, are these players really the "now" players?

The number one seeds - Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning, Lebron James, Tom Brady
Obviously all of these guys belong here. All four are arguably the most popular in their sport, all are still great players and three have won a Championship. I would be very surprised if Tiger Woods or Lebron James doesn't win the whole thing.

The number two seeds - LaDainain Tomlinson, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Roger Federer
Okay I already have a couple of problems here. ESPN defines the ultimate star as someone who has on-field success and off-field buzz. LaDainain Tomlinson is a great football player and if this was just on-field success he'd deserve to be this high but as far as off-field buzz there is none, certainly not what the other people in this tournament get. At the very least he should be a lower seed. Also, I don't know about Jeter being on here either. Jeter is still a great player but as far as a star he's not the star he was five years ago and he's definitely not on the level of his teammate A-Rod.

The number three seeds - Steve Nash, Kobe Bryant, Reggie Bush, Shaquille O'Neal
What? Listen I know that the entire sports world has a man-crush on Steve Nash for some reason but he's on the same level as Kobe and Shaq? Seriously? He's higher than Dwayne Wade? He hasn't come anywhere close to winning a Championship, his two MVP wins were a joke and his off-field buzz isn't in the same universe as Kobe, Shaq or Wade. I'm iffy on Reggie Bush too, I know he's a talented player but one season hardly makes a star.

The number four seeds - Dwayne Wade, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Maria Sharapova
I guess I cannot complain with any of these. They've all been pretty popular, are talked about a lot and have had a good amount of success.

Are there any developers out there that would like to partner and develop a Who's Now News Service? www.whosnow.com I will split the profits 50/50. Would you like to build a site that will always be current and relevant about Who's Now in the world in all kinds of categories? Let's drive some SERIOUS TRAFFIC and REVENUE?

It is a bad idea by ESPN. Great article though Lee as usual.

the dumbest idea sportscenter has ever had? quite possibly. and it seems from the espn message boards that most people HATE it.

If you want to see a worthwhile NCAA-type countdown field, check out Deadspin's link to an article by BravesBeat entitled, "Who's The Worst ESPN Personality Of Them All?" This is a little old, but sill hilarious. http://deadspin.com/sports/espn/whos-the-worst-espn-personality-of-them-all-114050.php You can get the final bracket, but make sure you go to BravesBeat and check out the results of the indiviual matchups along the way. If ESPN had a sense of humor, this is what they would put on their website. If they weren't so conceited, this is what they should run on the air instead of this lame story.

I whole-heartily agree with your omissions. Honestly, I think the whole thing is stupid because it's impossible to compare athletes across different sports. And seriously, who is the most NOW? Well it's Tiger Woods. His endorsement deals make more money than any other players salary in any sport. Who is the best player in his particular sport? Probably Federer. They're trying to get representatives from other sports (like MMA, X-games, etc) but those people are going home in the first round. Also, I take offense to you thinking Nash's MVP awards were a joke. He should've gotten it over Dirk AGAIN this year. He makes everyone around him a significantly better player. That said, is he very NOW - nah not so much. LOL. Good article Lee. I'm still waiting for a collaboration.

The brackets are so inconsistent because of the fan votes. ESPN said Duncan was boring about six thousand times during the NBA finals, the fans just followed suit by giving him the brush off. T.O is notorious for causing enough drama on and off the field that gets the attention of even non sports fans. I expected him to be a much higher seed.
