It's interesting to note that I have been a fan of the Transformers franchise for more than 20 years now, and when I saw that they were going to release a live action version of the story, I knew I would have to be there for the premiere. Bringing an old story out of the mothballs, Director Michael Bay finally had the technology to put together a film that would not only showcase the story of the Transformers, but it would do so in a way that was very exciting to an audience starving for great action on film. He takes the story back to the origins of the Transformers with this film, when they first make their way to Earth, and the fight that ensues over the Allspark, a cube of ultimate power that could create or destroy worlds. This cube has become lost somewhere on Earth, and the evil Decepticons must be stopped from locating it. The Decepticons are the "bad guys" of the Transformer world, wanting to destroy everything in a quest for world domination. Their counterparts are the Autobots, who want nothing other than to protect humankind and keep the Allspark from falling into the wrong hands.

The human element of this story comes into play when main character Sam Witwicky ends up purchasing one of the Autobots as his first car. This is just one of the shapes that these Transformers can take, as they can absolve the specifications of any vehicle, and decide that this will be their alter-ego of sorts. This transformation into a vehicle is a way for them all to hide in plain sight of those around them. Sam doesn't know what his car is capable of though, and quickly finds himself whisked away from a rough high school experience to a participant in a battle that could decide the future of the planet. It seems that Sam is has something that is Great Grandfather left behind which could be the key to finding this missing Allspark, and in turn helping the Autobots in keeping it from the evil Decepticons. The Decepticons have a dual search though, as they try to find their leader Megatron at the same time they search for this powerful cube. It all sets up a series of battles that will pit good against evil in a showdown for the ages.

You seem to love the Transformers themselves, as do I, but one of the biggest problems in the film is the fact that none of them are presented as "characters" in the film. Other than Bumblebee (who never speaks) and Optimus Prime (who is the Autobot's "voice") none of the others are presented in the film as trus characters and thus come off as being nothing more than window dressing for Michael Bay's over reliance on mindless action sequences. I do admit the film has some of the best action sequences of any summer blockbuster film but the sum of its parts do not a good movie make.
