While Duluth, Ga., is probably best known the world over for its "Runaway Bride" (Jennifer Wilbanks, who captured the headlines in 2005 after claiming she was abducted, then later admitting it was cold feet), its city officials and townspeople would probably prefer to be remembered for the patriotism and communal fun experienced at their free"Duluth Celebrates America" Fourth of July holiday event. And the folks in Duluth know a little something about running away and standing out from the crowd. Case in point: their 2007 July 4th celebration starts a day early, on Tuesday, July 3rd.
Convening at Scott Hudgens Park on its acres and acres of soccer field grounds fronting the Chattahoochee River, the celebration represents all that Duluth is proudly known to uphold: "Pride in the Old and New".
The gates to the night's festivities are scheduled to open at 5:00 p.m. Exclusivity-granted vendors will have booths set up to make a variety of purchaseable food and drinks available to attendees. While one can likely anticipate a leaflet being placed in one's hand by any number of local political hopefuls, only food will be sold at the event, so shoppping plans will have to be made for a mall or streetside run before the celebration begins.
Duluth is a town that was historically a major artery for the region's railroad. In fact, according to local historians, Duluth's growth was dependant on the railroad, and the city's name was established in conjunction with it. Given the town's pride in the old in this vein, the North Georgia Live Steamers, a non-profit miniature outdoor railroad club, will be operating their portable track and offering rides to kids who attend the celebration.
