I was fortunate to grow up in the greatest city in Finland. It is called Tampere and it has plenty to be proud of. Tampere is a destination for a traveler who wants to do and see and enjoy plenty different things. With population little over 200.000 people this city is not overly big but still ranked among biggest cities in Finland.

Make sure you will just take a day and walk around the city, in summer months everything is happening around the heart of the town, street called Hameenkatu. Tens of little cafeterias and ice cream stands and pubs, antique boutiques and flowers everywhere. They even have their own flower festival every summer. There is huge inside farmers market called Kauppahalli which still has the old feel to it and tens of little stands.

You just have to take a boat ride to a local favorite spot, little island called Viikinsaari. There is a sandy beach to wiggle your toes in the water and even dance pavillion and music happenings all summer long. Boat travels back and worth every hour.

Tampere has big Universities and is very popular spot for a great night life and bands are playing everywhere in the evenings. The locals hot spot is called Tullikamari (Local Customs House) It might not look much from the outside but if you enjoy music and want to meet some well educated younger Finnish people, this is the spot to visit!

Then there is the "must spot" for each tourist called Sarkanniemi. It has an amusement park, kiddie zoo, delphinarium, aquarium, planetarium, art museum and the famous Nasinneula observation tower, which stands over 550 feet tall. There is a famous restaurant in the tower where you can dine while observing the beautiful lakes and the whole Tampere area. Just a beautiful place to be! Here is more about Sarkanniemi and its attractions:
