Ethanol, Corn, Milk, Prices Increase

It appears that oil and gasoline aren't the only things that are going up in price these days. Milk, everyones favorite beverage, has gone up in price once again. From $3.80 to almost $5.00 a gallon. But milk however, isn't the only thing that will be on the rise. Other dairy products

such as butter, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream will too.

The rise in the cost of milk is going to be hard on those of us who buy three plus gallons of milk a week. I don't drink much of it anymore. But that's only because of my kids. They love it and I'm not going to deprive them of it or it's benefits. Milk is too important of a staple in their diets.

Why has the cost of milk gone up so high? The cost of milk has gone up for two reasons: 1. Fuel. Fuel. Ethanol a biochemical fuel is the common link between the cost of milk and corn going up in price. Ethanol or E-85 as it is called by the transportation industry, has many uses. Therefore, there are several types of ethanol. We are familiar with the ethanol that is used to fuel the automobiles. That type of ethanol will eventually replace gasoline because it is less expensive and it complies with clean air act.

There is also ethanol that is processed for aviation fuel. Otherwise known as AGE-85 Aviation Grade Ethanol (or jet fuel.)

Believe it or not there is something called beverage ethanol. Beverage ethanol is processed for the use of making grain spirits, such as vodka, or hard lemonade.

But the largest use of ethanol is industrial ethanol. Industrial ethanol is used in many products that we use on a daily basis. Shampoo, mouthwash, disinfectant sprays, and even some of our medications such as pills and antibiotics as well.

2. Corn. There is such a high demand for corn now between needing it to feed cattle to produce dairy products such as milk and cheese, and ethanol a biochemical that is needed for just about everything from aviation to your medication. We need them both. As long as there is a need for it, it will continue to be a hot comity. Corn, who would have ever thought it would become the golden produce? Fuel, milk, and food, they're all in demand, and they're all going up.

What a "boondoggle" using corn to produce Ethanol! Only corn farmers benefits! All food consumers Lose big time! Totally un-American! Take the Tariffs off of sugarcane Ethanol from Brazil; and put high tariffs on Saudi Oil. What next $5.00 a gal Milk & $5.00 a lb hamburger!?

I spent 0ver 18 years on a big dairy farm in Arkansas. The farmer barley gets by. Dairy farming is a good business. But I can guarantee you that $5.00 milk is not helping the farmer at all. When I was a kid there was a lot of small dairy farms all across the North west Arkansas know there are only a hand full left. The government has a lot to do with that. In the 80s The government told a lot of dairy farmers sell out or we will put you out. With that being said my father quit daring for about 4 years and then started back up with a bigger and better farm. You see just because you are a Dairy farmer that doesn't mean that they have to by you milk. My dads farm was a grade A Dairy farm. It is still running today. Dad sold it to some close friends back in the early 90s. Well that's all I got to say. ( GOD BLESS OUR FARMERS BECAUSE THAY ARE THE ONES THAT KEEP US FROM BEING HUNGRY )

The dairy farmers are the richest farmers in the country. That is because they have such a powerful lobby they can force the milk processor/distributors to pay them cartel like prices for the raw product. One year ago in Nevada the price paid was $12.05 per 100 lbs of raw milk. Now it is $23.49. That is almost double. $23.49 comes to $2.05 per gallon. There are many costs after that like bottling, and distribution. In Nevada you can buy milk out of the store for $3.30 a gallon. Basically this means that nobody is making any money except the farmer with his cartel like co-ops like the Dairy Farmers of America www.dfamilk.com and their Washington lobby.

Who ever wrote this is stupid. Milk went up cause Gasoline went up. It takes a lot more to ship it. And even if the corn thing was an issue. The US makes more than enough and if that doesn't make you happy, the Government pays people not to farm land. If things get scarice. They can make people make corn. Are you happy now. This is really incorect. I totally agree with Betty. Except dairy farmers don't get very much. Like for that 5 dollars a gallon you pay, a farmer gets 1. (I base this on the fact that PET pays $1/lb of milk and 1lb of water=1 gallon of water.) Corn has very little to do with milk anyway because most farmers feed Glutin(sp), the by-product of soybean oil production.

The price that is paid to farmers for their milk is determined by the Federal Milk Market Organization. They create a price that is based on a formula that uses the current wholesale markets for Butter, Cheese and Whey (notice it has nothing to do with corn). The idea that milk prices are up because corn is so expensive assumes that farmers set their own prices. This is a grossly negligent assumption and is totally incorrect. Study up your facts before publishing articles that the general public will use as fact. The wholesale market price of whey is at an all time outrageous high due to increased feed demands by China and the drought in Australia. This is the biggest driver in the increase in milk prices paid to the farmers.

What about the price of "Whey", the byproduct of cheese production, increasing in demand/price? This has driven the price paid to farmers forever.
