Well, at least he didn't have the arrogance to do it on the 4th of July. Just two days shy of the day on which Americans celebrate their independence from a government in which one man must answer to nobody, Pres. Bush pissed on not only the Constitution, but the very idea of America. If you are among the minority who still labor under the delusion that America as you knew it on the morning of January 20, 2001 still exists then what happened on the afternoon of July 2, 2007 is probably the final wake-up call you will get until that fateful day when a President that you don't like makes a decision that you consider to be criminal simply because...he or she can.

America, it is said, changed forever on September 11, 2001. That is not true. America changed the day that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were sworn into office and began the systematic dismantling of democracy. The last six years have witnessed what in any other country in the world could be described as a coup. America was built by people who feared that too much power in too few hands resulted in the oppression of too many. The framers of the American government worked long and hard to come up with a system that automatically and legally put the breaks on anyone who wanted more power than they were they Constitutionally allowed. And for over 200 years it worked. But the framers of this government never reckoned that someone like Dick Cheney and George Bush would come to power. They never reckoned on the evil of a Cheney or the stupidity of a Bush. It was beyond their comprehension that anyone as lacking in intelligence could ever get elected President and that anyone as Machiavellian as Cheney could find ways to turn the office of Vice President into a meaningful position.

Oh, this is rich. I LOVE that you gave credit to Bush the First for his wisdom in not toppling Saddam... Fantastic!

Insomnia Princess: yes there is proof but the proof is sealed until, 2025, I believe.

Actually Gulliani (if I spelled it correctly) is next scheduled to take over if GWB relinquishes office, in the Bush regime. I say "if" because GWB and his buddies still have time to manipulate the sleeping citizens. I do hope Barefoot is correct and I am just a paranoid old lady. Voting does little good when corrupt politicans can toss out votes or "fix" elections, among other things.

No they didn't get me Tim. I just choose the long view. We've been here 200+ years and we'll be here 200 more. Even Rome with all it's faults lasted 2000 years. I have confidence in the constitution and the common man to do the right thing. Like you, you're doing the right thing, the thing you think is right...in a left sort of way.

Bad news guys. They got to Barefoot, too. Even he is now defending Cheney by suggesting that he is no worse than the rest. Sad to see a good man go by the wayside.

So you're saying power-hungry people go into politics? That's not very new.

"Take a few moments to shed a tear, if you must, as you remember what it was like to live in an America where the President of the United States wasn't above the law." Hey Sexton, you mean like when 'ol "never seen a chick I didn't wanna hose" Clinton lied under oath? And when he was not prosecuted? Sorta like Sandy Berger?

"ahem, Alban..nice try..."doing something about it" is exactly what Tim is doing...Mr. Bush would like nothing better than for there to be no dissenting voices...louder, Tim!" - Yeah. What Jeff said... and Princess? It is all out there on the big ol' Internet. Look it up.

Just for clarification since it is sometimes not clear in type, my comments were sincere questions of curiosity to know more and not of a facetious nature.

If Bush has too much power as President, is it because he has abused his powers or because we as a nation have allowed him to gain too much power; or a bit of both? Or neither? Is there actual proof that he has broken laws or abused his position of power? Many complain about Bush but none have been able to give me factual reasoning to back it up. You have at least touched on that in this op/ed piece but I am curious to know more. For example, tell me more about these "signing statements" and how the executive branch has taken all the power in decision making.

I presume that you vote. Perhaps you could voice your opinions louder in that venue. Perhaps with your ability to write you could influence the current law makers to change their way of makin' laws. The apathy in this country is the reason Mr Bush is in the position of power. Quit your bitchin' and do something about it.
