Vaginal yeast infections are generally easy to detect. For the most part, women and young girls suffering from this condition often complain of persistent itchiness. Initially, the itchiness may be mild. Thus, many will attribute the discomfort to tight jeans, soapy products, etc. On the other hand, some vaginal yeast infections tend to worsen, which lead many women to seek medical treatment. What is a Yeast Infection?
A yeast infection is a type of fungus, Candida, which is common in women. Yeast infection conversations are usually a hush-hush subject. Understandably, the topic of vaginal itchiness may be a little embarrassing. However, the condition should be brought to the attention of a physician – especially if the infection is recurring and over-the-counter products are not effective with treating symptoms. In some instances, lingering vaginal yeast infections may require prescription medication.
Other Symptoms of a Yeast Infection
Even though vaginal itchiness is a tale-tell sign of a yeast infection, some women may skip the itchiness and show signs of other symptoms. Common symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include:
• Tenderness
• Rash on lips of the vagina
• Painful urination, possibly burning
Causes of a Yeast Infection
Several factors may contribute to a yeast infection. Yeast infections are commonly linked with sexual activity; however, this infection may also occur in young girls who have not engaged in sex. Although women are more prone to yeast infections, men may also develop an infection. In this case, it is possible to pass an infection during sexual intercourse. Yeast infections are also common during a woman's menstrual cycle. Infections occurring around this time are generally mild and do not require treatment. Other causes of vaginal yeast infections also include:
• Wearing tight jeans
• Use of antibiotics or birth control pills
• Poor diet
• Pregnancy
• Stress
