The Freegan movement is huge. Freegans are everywhere...but what exactly IS a Freegan?

A Freegan is someone who refuses to support the deplorable practices of some businesses with their finances. Freegans theorize that if they purchase one thing, eventually they will find that their money went to another company involved in the manufacturing of the said product that has bad practices of some sort. These bad practices can range from animal misuse to human exploitation, and environmental issues, as well.

How do Freegans live, then?

Freegans may live in a home just like you. Some may live in a communal type setting, as many living in one home and sharing their resources is preferable in their creed. Freegans may live in abandoned or empty buildings as squatters. They see these buildings as a waste of perfectly good living space that the homeless or very poor can live in. I agree with their philosophy, there. Landlords just want money, they don't care who goes cold or homeless.

Well, if they don't buy anything, how do they eat?

Freegans may know someone who owns a food shop, ask for left overs that will be thrown out, or just go in at the last minute of store closing and ask whomever owns the store. Dumpster diving is also a popular avenue for Freegans. While fishing in a big dumpster might sound gross to you, most times the dumpster is cleaner than non-divers would think. In some cases food items are double bagged to reduce chance of vermin scenting it, then making the dumpster their haunt. This is a great boon for Freegans who are actually reducing waste by consuming food that would otherwise end up in a landfill.

But, doesn't food degrade over time?

Takeaways
  • Freegans may live in abandoned or empty buildings as squatters.
  • Much food going into dumpsters will be double bagged beforehand.
  • Freegans can find much of what they need in other people's waste.

This article sheds light a topic that is not talked about often enough. Thank you Julie. In response to comment from donna park, in your opinion, landlords being greedy earns them a living so they keep the economy going? I would rather be able to spend money to survive with basics, which also helps the economy. Throwing out food, clothing, furniture etc. is not an option for many. If things don't sell at a garage sale & the area donation centers won't accept items, I set items in a box outside of the dumpster and people take what they need. Trading items is an excellent option over greed. Financial problems for any renter can be eased by a landlord allowing renter to do some work to improve the property. Painting, sanding, planting repairing etc. and many times does not require "new" and is an improvement.

I wouldn't dive in for food, but I've been known to rescue furniture. Never heard of the term "Freegans." Interesting article.

Gross! I have been in a dumpster once. After Christmas shopping I accidently threw away a bag that had a 14K gold bracelet in it. I lived in an apartment complex at the time, and you bet I went after that bracelet! Dumpsters are disgusting. I found the bracelet and took a very long, hot shower! I think the Freegans are putting themselves in a position of high-risk for disease.

I know Freegans. I love what they do, but I cannot bring myself to eat the food. There really is so much waste in this world.

Very interesting. I haven't taken food or clothing from a dumpster, but I have taken good furniture from one on more than one occasion. I knew a few people who lived by this philosophy before I moved. However, I didn't know it actually had a name. Great read. :-)

This article was interesting and informative, I didn't even know this movement existed before reading this.

Wow, this was really informative ~ never even heard of this movement. While dumpster diving for food is a bit too extreme with me, I will also pull perfectly good items out of the other people's garbage... If not for me, at least to donate to a thrift store.

Thanks, Donna. Freegans main problem with our economy is the waste. We waste so much, from clothes to food to living space. I don't live from a dumpster, but I can tell you that if I see something being thrown out that is perfectly useable, I will think about diving for it!

This article is informative and very well written. However I have to say that our country is built on our economy and if everyone believed this way our economy would definately fail. Even the greedy landlord has to earn a living. Don't get me wrong, I know this is not your belief or opinion I just wanted to give ya mine! :)
