Choosing the right online courses can be complicated. You need to consider things such as course content, structure, and the way tests and study sessions are held. Use these tips when considering your next semester:

Step One: Make a Career Plan

If you don't have a career plan yet, taking a variety of course content can give you a better idea of your likes and dislikes. If you know what you want, choose course content that deals most directly with your dream job and your goals for the future.

Step Two: Find out Which Courses are Required and Which Courses You May Choose

As you work toward your degree, you'll find that most online programs offer courses that you are required to take and others that will allow you to gain the specific knowledge in which you are interested. When going over your options for the next semester, look for course content that fits your future and is in line with your personal and professional goals.

Step Three: Look for Structure and Direction in the Course Syllabus

If you can find a course syllabus before the course begins, take a good look at it. A good course syllabus will include plans for readings, tests, class meetings and other information. If the course syllabus has a lot of blank spaces where there should be assignments and book information, the course itself might lack structure and direction. If the course syllabus is full of assignments and details, you won't have to worry about the schedule later.

Step Four: Prepare for Taking Tests Online

Taking tests online can be a very different experience than taking tests in the traditional manner in a classroom setting. The test will usually be timed, giving you a certain amount of time for each question or section. You might be able to use a book or notes.

A very good approach to help you gain confidence in online test taking is to complete practice tests as you work through the course material. Make sure you're prepared for the online test format before you sit down for the real thing.

Step Five: Discuss Course Requirements with your Facilitator
