Nikon Increases Investment in Thailand for Digital Cameras
digital cameras and several other technological products including optical devices in Thailand.

The investment in Thai production will increase the number of single lens reflex cameras produced by ten thousand per month at the end of March 2008. Nikon also plans to raise the production of interchangeable lens in Thailand by 10,000 monthly in the 2007-2008 business year. According to reuters.com, Thailand's Board of Investment said that its approval of the expansion of production in its factory in the central providence of Ayutthaya has lead to Nikon hiring more employees leading to about five thousand new jobs for Thais.

The types of lenses the Thai factory now produces, single lens reflex (SLRs) and Digital SLRs are more advanced and costly than other lens because they have better features and are more precise in taking pictures. The factory in Thailand is the main producer of Digital SLRs and employees approximately fifteen thousand people.

According to the Bangkok Post, the expansion of production in Thailand will consist mainly of the products that cost more to be made and the move from Japan to Thailand will help reduce costs for Nikon and lead to more profits for the company. Manufacturing in Thailand will also help the company compensate for the increase of demand of the digital cameras in the country which has increased by thirty percent over the last year.

Nikon began to use Thaikand to produce cameras and other equipment in 1990. As the technology improved, and continues to change, the company decided it was useful and beneficial to relocate its production to Thailand to create new models more rapidly to compete with the increase of demand. According to the Bangkok Post, Nikon has six production companies worldwide including three in Japan, two in China and one in Thailand.
