I'm always looking for ways to lighten my load, especially on a day hike.
I carry the following items in the pockets of my cargo pants, but a fanny pack will work just as well. I check the contents weekly and replace whatever I use as soon as I get home.
1. Compass
2. Topographic map
3. Notebook or paper and pencil (pens freeze)
4. Plastic bags
A. heavy plastic garbage/leaf size
B. Ziploc® gallon size and pint size - to make a solar still or carry water
5. Bandana - for head covering or collecting water
6. Mirror/Sewing kit - mine is a set
7. Folding scissors - mine's on my key chain
8. Dental floss - 100 feet at least
9. Disposable lighter - I carry three
10. Firestarter - cotton balls, lint, tiny tampon
11. Knife - I'm fond of my Swiss Army knife
12. Magnifying glass
13. First aid kit including:
A. Antiseptic wipes
B. Water purification tablets
C. Pain killer
D. Epsom salts - 4-oz to 32-oz water
E. Bee sting kit
F. Sunblock - at least 30 SPF
G. Adhesive bandages - assorted sizes
H. Antibiotic ointment [in an emergency, use this as firestarter]
14. Small flashlight - I'm fond of my mini Maglite®
15. High energy bar - Lärabar works best for me
16. Thin gloves
A. Plastic MD office without powder - to carry water
B. Wool and nylon - for hand warmers
17. Bright color flagging tape - to mark the route
