I recently watched the new reality show Hey Paula on Bravo. If you don't know already, this show is all about our beloved Paula Abdul. She's the ex-Laker chick who became a pop star and (now) hosts American Idol.

We all love her because she's so sweet. Yet, through the years she's started acting more like that drunk aunt that always gives you cookies on your birthday and then passes out before the party is over. For this reason, we've all been wondering what's up? Is she an alcoholic? Does she do drugs? Is she just putting on to get our attention? Well, I finally got the answer after watching the show; she's suffering from sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation is a serious issue in this country and affects thousands of Americans. Everyone seems to be overloading their schedule and compensating by drinking double lattes, energy drinks and coffee. Since its usually not talked about, no one seems to take it's short and long term effects seriously.

If you fail to get at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep a night on a regular basis, you'll immediately see the signs. The short term effects are a loss of coherency, inability to concentrate, slow reaction times and disrupted motor coordination. The long term effects are increased risks for diabetes and other illnesses. For these reasons, it's important to get the proper amount of sleep on a regular basis.

Many times, obtaining the proper amount of sleep is just a matter of saying 'no.' Although there are several things to do in the world, no man or woman can truly do them all. So we need to cut back on our daily lists and focus on what is most important to us. I truly believe that this is what our friend Paula needs to do.

On her show Hey Paula, she was obviously trying to do too many things - clothing designing, American Idol promoting, perfume/jewelry selling and general touring to meet her fans for awards. It is all too much and she isn't getting enough sleep. To make matters worse, she is surrounded by assistants who don't seem to be getting the job done. It is apparent that she needs to slow down. Her career may not be as prolific, but she'll be well rested and able dispel any rumors about sobriety.

I have to agree with you. However, I get the feeling that her 'people' don't really care deeply about her anyway. Otherwise, they'd slow the Paula train down long enough for her to sleep, eat and have a quality life. I get the feeling they don't even listen to her. It actually makes me a little sad.

Ya know, I sat through one of the "Hey Paula" episodes, and for the life of me I didn't understand how her "people" let her do that show. If it's to help her image, it isn't helping. She's a mess!
