Transformer fans rejoice! The best film of the summer has arrived and it will not disappoint you. Directed by Michael Bay, Transformers delivers in giving 80's babies, toy collectors and science fiction fans the characters they loved from the cartoon series while creating something new for the series.
I was a bit skeptical when I heard this film was in production over a year ago. I asked myself, what would American directors and writers do to my beloved Transformers? I'd read many internet rumors indicating some radical changes in regard to the voice actors and character design and with a groan I thought, "Ok Hollywood is going to F-this thing up, Where's the Rolaids?"
To my satisfaction all of the doubts and fears I had were put to rest after watching this film. The dialogue between the characters is very enjoyable and well paced. I really think the writers researched hard to insure that the sprit of the characters and personalities in the film were authentic. For me, this is one of the most powerful elements of the transformer animated franchise because each Autobot and Decepticon was know for their distinct and powerful personality.
The real treat of the film was Optimus Prime. I watched this film at an IMAX in New York City and every time Optimus spoke the audience cheered. It was an exciting feeling to be in a room of about 500 people and feel as if every person in the audience hung on to each word Mr. Cullen breathed life into. For many of us, late twenty and thirty-something's he really brought us back to those magical days of the cartoon series.
Bringing in the original voice of Optimus Prime for this film was the best decision Michel Bay and the producers made. It really gave the film a lot of heart and ultimately created rabid fan support. I really hope this will be the beginning of a new trend in Hollywood that gives recognition to voice actors and the animated franchises they help build.
Overall, this film was a total success in delivering on much of the hype and excitement it's pending release generated. The CG special effects were excellent and the action of the film runs at a steady clip. I would recommend this film for families and for diehard anime/action fans. Without giving too much away, the film does leave the possibility of a sequel in the future, I just hope that they bring back a more of the original voice characters and continue to keep us on our toes with new transformations of the franchise.
