Venus Williams is triumphant at Wimbledon! Venus Williams, 23, played against a much younger Marion Bartoli, 18, for the Wimbledon title on July 7, 2007 in Wimbledon, England. From start to finish, both women kept the crowd on edge wondering who'd win. They both displayed power, endurance and determination in their efforts to take the title. However, Venus Williams prevailed in the end.
Bartoli caught Venus off guard with unconventional techniques like high lobs and angular hits. This game plan had Venus fighting to hit balls in places that were unexpected on the court. Although more physically fit in appearance, Williams was out of breath at many times during her play against Bartoli and even pulled a muscle in her left, upper thigh. Yet, even through the pain, she never gave up.
Williams didn't let the grass court (a prime playing field for Marion Bartoli) keep her from playing hard against her opponent. After seeing Bartoli's strategy to beat her on the court, she responded with hydro-power hits and cross court runs that kept her in the game. Then, in the final set, when it was her turn to serve the ball, she wasted no time in wrapping things up.
After serving a ball directly towards the center of her opponent, Venus broke into a smile as she watched Bartoli respond with only a flinch. She'd won Wimbledon again! She'd also made history with her fourth Wimbledon win and would now be considered on par with female tennis greats like Chris Everett and Billy Jean King.
In her acceptance speech, Venus Williams thanked all of the important people in her life and stated that Serena, the other half of this tennis dynamic duo, was her inspiration. "Our earnings are now equal," she gloated, referring to Serena's take from wining several majors. She also paid her respects to Billy Jean King.
In the end, as she posed for pictures holding her cup, it was apparent that Venus Williams was a true champion and deserving of her win and new place in history.
