TV Guide has released its listing of the 25 Top Cult Shows of all time. While there are many good choices that were made, there are many popular cult shows that were left off of the list. You can take a look at the list here.

The list was also run by Stephen Gegler, a TV historian who is currently working on an encyclopedia of Cult TV. We discussed the list by TV Guide. I was very surprised with some of the commentary that he had with the list.

The A-Team

LVP: I see in your notes that you have an issue with the fact that, "The A-Team," is not listed by TV Guide. Could you explain why you think that it should have made the list?

Gegler: "The A-Team," has made multiple lists in the past for being one of the most syndicated shows in all of history. I did some research for this in my book and found that every hour of the day, there are sixteen showing of, "The A-Team," around the world. This puts, "The A-Team," close to being o par with a show like, "Star Trek."

Batman, The Monkeys, Scooby-Doo, and The Muppet Show

LVP: Can you give me another idea of a show that should have made the list?

Gegler: Actually, I can give you four good examples. "Batman," "The Monkeys," "Scooby-Doo," and "The Muppet Show," are four great examples. Not only are these three shows still in great circulation, but they launched the careers of their characters.

Granted, Batman was a popular character before the show, but comic book sales skyrocketed for DC once the TV show came out. To this day, "Batman," is still very high on the syndication list for many countries.

"The Monkeys" is not only still in syndication, but the CDs of the music from the show are still in popular circulation. I read an article once that The Monkeys are in the top ten for most played group on the radio of all time.

"The Muppet Show," is a show that is acceptable to multiple generations. People forget that all of the Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Gonzo toys came into being because of "The Muppet Show." The show created cultural icons that are known around the world. There are thousands of people that still love the "Muppet Show."

There are many fans of TNG that will be very angry at the exclusion of their favorite show.

Good article, but I take exception to his wishing Star Trek: The Next Generation was included. While it's true the original was cult, Trek is now a global multi-billion dollar franchise. To isolate ST:TNG for a cult list, one must remember it was one of the top rated syndicated shows for its time & became the first syndicated TV show to be nominated for the Emmy for Best Dramatic Series in the seventh season. As a writer who penned an episode of ST:TNG, I have found TNG's appeal is nearly everywhere. A cult show is colorful & fans are "cultish" - but Star Trek seems way beyond a cult show now. To me, it's quite the contrary, as a fan & writer of TNG, I find its popularity with so many more satisfying than cult - however fun that label may be to affix to something.

The "then and than" thing was my fault. I accidently had my computer on auto spell correct, and taht was how the Monkees error got out. I am turing that off so taht I never have an error like that again. L.

Interesting article. I looked at the list, and find it interesting that Buffy is there (as it should be) but Angel is not. Along the same lines, Xena is on the list but Hercules is not.

I was going to say, why not the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special but I got cut off. It was a one-time show, but come on. It's a cult classic. Nothing tops it. "Happy Life Day, Everyone!!"

I, too, am shocked that STNG wasn't on the list. I just saw one last night. They never get old. I'm surprised Lost in Space wasn't on the list as well. I think MASH, Seinfeld and Friends should also be considered cult shows. You can watch reruns of those shows over and over again and still laugh. I think teen shows like Beverly Hills 90210, Saved by the Bell and The O.C. should also be considered "cult," although perhaps not the BEST. ;-) By the way, it's The Monkees, not The Monkeys, and when you say "more" it's always "than," not "then." I have a few grammatical issues with the article, but I enjoyed the content. I was just talking to friends about the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman. Would they be considered cult? I was actually surprised that Survivor isn't on the list. Knight Rider was overlooked as well. I found H.R. Pufnstuff to be the strangest pick. I don't recall that show having a cult following. What about The New Zoo Revue? Or why not the 1978 Sta
