Frustrated with low carbohydrate dieting, my husband and I were desperate for a diet that worked, without making us feel deprived of the things that we like. We started the low carbohydrate diet at the beginning of this year and had both lost weight, but we were stuck. We had been strict on the diet and were seeing no results. It was very frustrating to deprive ourselves and see no results. It was even more frustrating to find that if we slipped up, even one time; it was detrimental to our diet. In some cases, one weekend of eating normal foods would result in a nearly ten-pound weight gain. We had to work for a week and a half to make up for one indiscretion.

Low-Calorie dieting is what we opted to try. We educated ourselves on the restrictions of such a diet. We contacted our physician who informed us that if you cut too many calories from your diet you are setting yourself up for failure. We bought a book entitled The Calorie King, Calorie, Fat, & Carbohydrate Counter written by The Calorie King, Allan Borushek. This little book has become our dieting bible. Everything you can imagine from fast food to weird items like a pig foot is listed in this little book. The Calorie King has a great website filled with information and support.

Our physician instructed my husband to limit his caloric intake to less than 1800 calories per day. My magic number was 1500 calories per day. Armed with education, we began our diet. I must admit I was more than a little apprehensive of this diet. After all, I had previously been successful with the low carbohydrate diet, it just was not working this time. My husband was more confident about our potential success than I. With his urging, and my desire to lose weight, we began the diet together.

Congratulations, Angela! I am pretty much in the same boat as you were starting out. It takes me two weeks to lose what I gained from one "accidental" Zebra cake from the gas station. I have been considering tracking my calories, but fear having to calculate everything I eat. Maybe I'll get the motivation once the kids are back in school and I can take more time for me. :)
