I've decided to take over the reigns from my mother and host my sister-in-law's upcoming baby shower, which might seem like an overwhelming task for some people. Although a younger, less confident me would agree with the last bit of that statement wholeheartedly, I'm optimistic the more responsible and less flustered me will be able to handle any and every conceivable detail, right down to the wording on the invitations.

Here's the thing about invitations: like everyone else, I want mine to be original, creative, and unique. When I found out my sister-in-law will be having a girl, I resisted the urge to have everything at her baby shower accented in pink and lace. And, thinking about the invitations, I decided not to engrave them with a quotation most people might expect. Nope. No "sugar and spice and everything nice, that's what little girls are made of" would cut it.

So what to do? Like every other time I've run into a brick wall ever since I can remember, the first place I looked to find something, I turned on the trusty computer and spent a few hours researching appropriate quotations for the occasion.

For those of you who may find yourselves in a situation similar to mine, wanting to pull off a baby shower worthy of praise, despite being somewhat unconventional, here's a quick list of quotations that might contain that special adage you've been looking for: the one that will hopefully set the tone for the shower and leave a lasting impression, both on the mother-to-be and prospective attendees.

Like mother, like daughter--Proverb

A son is a son till he takes a wife, a daughter is a daughter all her life--Irish Saying

I am fond of children...except boys--Lewis Carroll

A baby girl...
One of the most beautiful miracles in life,
One of the greatest joys we can ever know,
And one of the reasons why
There is a little extra sunshine, laughter, and happiness
In your world today-- Unknown

A baby is God's opinion that life should go on-- Carl Sandburg

A girl is
Inocence playing in the mud
Beauty standing on its head
And Motherhood dragging a doll by the foot--Allan Beck
