I'm originally from Hampton Bays, yet years ago when we moved out to Mastic Beach I had not known quite what I was in for. You see I had friends from the Hampton's, friends in Manorville, and friends in Moriches. The moment they heard I was moving to Mastic Beach tables turned and my 'richer' of friends brought out their true colors.

"Mistake Beach", "Mastic Trash", and "Trashtic Mastic" were not uncommon names to be thrown at me.

I liked where I was though. I was 12. The graduating class was nearly 700 or more. There were kids everywhere my age, and none of them were going to judge me based on the shoes or clothes I worse, to them, I was just me. They came from a poor family, I came from a poor family, and everything we had we shared, or borrowed. If Lucy got a newvideo game, we were all at Lucy's house. If Peter got a new bike, we all took turns riding it. It made sense, it was fun, and honestly a bit charming.

So, I figured I, would take you on a tour through my town and some of my favorite spots, the local people, and what to expect if you come to live here.

Okay... I will start with the schools. Oh yes William Floyd will brag about the size, and the new renovations, and the teachers and staff... It took quite a few years for the renovations to complete, but once all was said and done, the school was a glorious building with enough room to get lost. Intimidating to say the least... but offered plenty. From art classes to photography, it's got it all. Seriously, the Highschool alone is like a college sized campus.

You have your normal problems, cliches not getting along with other cliques, but its been that way since the beginning of time. I never got into any fights. I always figured if you hang with the wrong crowd you attract trouble. Choices are what you make of schools.

Why Do I Live In Mastic Beach has always been a common question, and honestly I don't know why. Every town has it's rap. From here to the Hamptons...there is no such thing as a perfect town. HELLO!

Im actually fond of it here. So many people think bad things about the town, but truly... like I said, there is good and bad everywhere. Even in upper class neighborhoods out in the hamptons. Yep! I just find it ridiculous that so many have this bad taste in their mouth about it here. Its lovely in some parts, just like any town. People hear the name MB and automatically have bad things to say. Its sad, where there is good though, there is always bad, no matter where you go.

Honestly, I don't know why people have the misconception that you can't make money anywhere other than NY-- not true! There are many, many other places in which to make a good living, have a great quality of life, and still be close to family on Long Island, if that is of importance to you. If you do any traveling at all, this becomes clear. I grew up in Mastic Beach but relocated to Pennsylvania for college-- I'm a permanent transplant now, and consider it the best choice I've made. There is life outside of "The Island!" You don't have to struggle if you open your mind a bit. I still visit, and though the area has its flaws, there are many good points, too. Life is what you make of it. There are lovely, hard-working people (including my family and friends) that bring life to that community. Thanks for your article, but you could have included some concrete, positive statistics about the school district, civic organizations, etc. if you wanted to present something completely c

It's decent if you know what areas to avoid. Like any town, you have to know where to go, and where not to. Every place, even posh towns like the Hamptons have their 'scary streets'. lol. Thanks for stopping in ;)

Great little article and insight on life in Mastic Beach and surprised about the gang and drug activity - especially since I have been looking at real estate on the internet in Mastic Beach. I am not one of those rich big spenders and to me it looked like it would be a nice and reasonable place to live and to buy a small (very small) piece of property on Long Island. While I live in Florida - I miss being near Long Island Sound in the summer. I have not been to Mastic Beach and was planning a trip int he near future and thanks for making more aware. Linda

I considered it, but I know that leaving won't solve much of the problem. I know that out of NY it'd be harder to find a good paying job, keeping me in the same perdicament. Oh did I spell that right? lol. We got pre-approved this past weekend, and we are looking. Im excited, but I know the bills.. oh the dag bills... LOL. I dont even want to think about it. lol.

Wow! Nicely written about your area. Easier said than done, but have you looked at moving out of NY? :-) It was easier for me when I did it back in 1977 and left Westchester County and went to Virginia. I sure couldn't afford it then and still wouldn't be able to! Dave
