San Diego Named Best City For Dogs by Magazine
With its beautiful climate, miles of sandy beaches, and wealth of attractions, it's no surprise that San Diego has been dubbed one of man's best tourist destinations, but San Diego has also just been given the title of
'DogTown USA 2007', in recognition of the fact that this lovely city by the sea is a fabulous place for man's best friend too!
The award comes from Dog Fancy Magazine, the world's premiere dog magazine. This is part of Dog Fancy's national competition. Dog Fancy's readers nominate America's "most dog-friendly city". The Editors of Dog Fancy Magazine said today in their press statement that, "after digging high and low, reading all submitted entries carefully, and researching facts and figures", they've arrived at the ultimate decision to award the "DogTown USA 2007" to San Diego this year.
The competition was apparently pretty stiff, with the eight runners up being Austin, Texas; Fort Collins, Colorado; Madison, Wisconsin; Sanford, Florida; Long Beach, California: Seattle Washington: Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Carmel, California. San Diego and the runners-up for the "DogTown USA" title are going to be profiled in the October issue of Dog Fancy, which will be on sale on newsstands beginning September 25.
So how does a town earn the title of "DogTown USA"? The Editors of Dog Fancy Magazine say it is no small feat. "The ideal criteria for the winner includes the presence of dog-friendly activities, restaurants and businesses, dog parks or other off-leash areas, critical-care facilities, medical specialists, city-sponsored spay/neuter drives, pro-dog legislation, low surrender rates, high preventative care participation and a good vet-pet ratio."
