How often do you hear complaints from friends, family, or co-workers about being tired? How often do YOU complain of being tired? The buzz of the morning alarm clock, for too many people, marks the low point of their day. The Harvard Health Letter in an August 1997 article stated that, "One in four Americans is so tired on a daily basis that simply waking up, staying alert at work, tending to household chores, and having the energy for one's friends, spouse, or children may take on the dimensions of a Herculean effort" (Feeling Tired).

Most of us attribute our tiredness and low energy to being too busy and having too much. With the frantic non-stop pace of American life, this can often be true but usually the real culprits of Americans decreased energy are our bad daily habits. For example, the food we eat, the amount of and way we sleep and how we handle problems emotionally all affect how tired we feel. The good news is we can all make simple changes in our lives that combat life's biggest energy zappers and recharge our bodies and minds!

A Restful Sleep for Increased Energy

The National Sleep Foundation, in a 2002 poll, found that over 50% of Americans have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep (Let Sleep), leading to an epidemic of sleepiness and lethargy during the daytime. With always so much to do during the day, Americans usually relegate sleep to the bottom of their priority list. Missing out on sleep though, has a detrimentally draining effect on your productivity, energy, memory and positivity. In order to get a more recuperative sleep, the key to fighting off energy lows in the day, try the follow steps:

1) Keep your alarm clock covered. When you're trying to fall asleep, looking at the clock to see what time it is or how soon you're going to have to wake up can result in a poor night's sleep. Set your alarm clock then cover or hide so you can't see it but still hear the alarm in the morning.
