Snack Ideas for Low Carb Eaters

I have been living the low carb lifestyle over a year now. The term "low carb" sometimes evokes negative associations for people, but it is a healthy lifestyle when it is properly incorporated into one's life. I eat mainly lean meats, whole grains, lots
of vegetables and some fruits. When I began eating low carb, it was the first time in my life that I actually understood how sugars and starches affect my body. I don't count carbs, as with the Adkins diet, but rather I eliminated starchy breads and pastas, refined sugar, and potatoes from my life. I ended up losing weight and feeling better than I could ever remember feeling. My blood sugar stays level so I no longer feel spikes and loss of energy from a rush of sugar. I have heard recent news reports that sugar prematurely ages the skin so I am glad that I have eliminated the white stuff from my diet.

I tend to eat small snacks throughout the day with a sensible dinner in the evening. A difficult transition for me was finding snack food that wasn't starchy or loaded with sugar. Here are my suggestions for low carb snacks. These suggestions can't be found in a snack machine, so you need to plan your snacks ahead. This practice actually works to your benefit because you will much less likely to overeat if you have your snacks prepared in advance.

Turkey pepperoni is a great low carb snack. Regular pepperoni is also low carb, but I prefer turkey pepperoni because it is much lower in fat. The protein fills me up and I love the taste. Read the serving sizes on the back of the package and then ration out how many pieces you should eat. I usually divide mine out and place the portions into re-sealable snack bags. This makes them easy to grab when you are hungry or throw in your lunch bag for work.

Almonds are my favorite nut. If you are yearning for a snack that is salty and has some crunch, then grab a palmful of almonds; there is no need to eat potato chips. I prefer almonds over cashews and peanuts for a snack because almonds are higher in dietary fiber. I keep my almonds in the refrigerator because the healthy oils in nuts tend to breakdown more at room temperature.

Been on atkins since september and have lost 75 lbs thus far, still have about 40 more to go but feel great. To satisfy my sweet tooth I eat sugar free jello with whip cream or just a couple spoons of whip cream by itself - its only 2 carbs for 2 tablespoons. I also love peanut butter and will eat a teaspoon of peanut butter - only 4 carbs for 2 tablespoons. I also sometimes buy sugar free popsicles (4 carbs) and the low carb ice cream bryers makes as well as the atkins bars (but I only eat like 1/4 of one because the carb count is so high and I don't really trust that "net carb" thing). I was just googling low carb snacks and found this site as well as a recipe for baked cheese crisps, I'm going to try those soon because I do miss my crunchy snacks and not really a fan of nuts. Good luck with your diets everyone!

I am currently on a pseudo Atkins diet. I just started about 2 weeks ago and already feel better about myself and have lost 10 lbs. I have my diet broken down as follows. Mon, Tue,Friday, - I start with 2 eggs scrambled and some cheese. Since I have class I'm on campus all day, so there arent really low carb options, so I take beef sticks (make sure they're low carb... if it's something like teriyaki it probably isn't low carb) I snack on that a few times a day, and for dinner a nice spinach salad with cut up cheese, turkey, and some low carb dressing. On tue, thur, sat, sun - I don't have class, so as soon as I wake up I work out . This is a great time to workout because you burn extra carbs/fat you have left due to nothing being in your system yet. then I just basically keep my carb count around 30 on these days. My favorite thing to eat are turkey burgers. The ones I get taste just like breakfast sausage, have extremely low amounts of calories as well as carbs. I supplement

I didn't necessarily do atkins but I started a low carb diet. What I found that worked for me was eating a sensible breakfast (i.e. turkey bacon, a couple boiled eggs)... then if hungry before lunch I would eat half a red grapefruit. Then for lunch something like a broccoli and cheese soup... and for lunch basically i had salads with skinless chicken with honey mustard dressing. If I got hungry between meals then I would eat the other half of the grapefruit. This worked wonders for me. I also worked out twice a day on my gazelle and using my easy shaper at night, I also went walking in the park. For a treat sometimes I would buy sugarfree or low carb icecream just as a thankyou to me for doing well. I lost about 65 pounds in about 6 months. I was very consistent and devoted. I would say the main thing is that it has to be a mind thing. I said numerous times that I would lose weight but didn't really do it until I had it set in my mind. Hope this helps

Thank you so much for the tips. I have been on many diets before and none of them really work for me. I have been watching my carbs for the past almost 5 weeks now. I am over 300 pounds and my health will soon become an issue. I'm lucky that it hasn't already. I have found that cutting all the potatoes, rices, breads etc...and sweets of coarse...has made a tremendous difference! First thing I noticed was the "no bloating" feeling and then the weight started to come off. I don't know how much but I can feel a difference. So coming across sites like this is so helpful...THANKS again!

You know what helps me stay motivated is using the ketostix to see when I'm actually in ketosis. It lets me know that I have used all of the "sugar" as fuel and that I'm burning fat now. It keeps you going because you don't want to go through another 2 days of initial induction. Also, make sure you snack all the time with low or no carb snacks. Look for variety in your snacks online. Best of luck.
