How to Build a Platform Bed for Less Than $50

Building a platform bed is a super easy DIY project that can easily be accomplished for about $50 or less. Platform beds are perfect for lofts, kids rooms, and even Japanese décor. The look of a platform bed is simplistic and clean.

You can also add castors to your platform bed DIY project to make it
 mobile!

To Make a Platform Bed You Will Need:

Sheets of MDF

2X4's

Power drill

Wood Screws

Castors (optional)

The first step is to measure your mattress. You can build your platform bed to fit any side bed. The larger the bed the more the materials will cost you.

Now, you have a few options here. You can make your platform bed the same size as your mattress or simply add on about 10 extra inches in dimension to create a contemporary look with your mattress places in the middle.

Now that you have your dimensions you need to build a simple square frame out of 2X4's. Simple pre drill holes in the end and screw the four sides together with wood screws.

Now, you need to add some support brackets in the middle. I recommend at least two, more for larger beds.

Simply measure how wide the inside of the frame is. Have 2 2X4's cut to this size.

Place them in the frame, spacing them evenly apart, about 1/3 of the length of the bed.

Now, pre drill holes form the outside of the platform bed frame into these center supports. Use long wood screws again to attach them.

Now, you need to have a sheet of MDF cut to the same size at your wood frame. This may take multiple sheet s depending on the size of your platform bed.

Lay the MDF sheets on top to completely cover the top of the wood frame. Line the edges up for a neat and professional appearance..

Now, pre drill holes through the top of the MDF down into the wood frame. Use screws to attach the MDF sheets to the wood frame.

Now, use wood filler to fill any holes and seems.

Once the wood filler is dry you need to turn the platform bed over. At this point you can add four castors, one in each corner. For full size, queen size, and king sized platform beds, you will wan tot attach castors to the inside support beams as well.

Lay your castors in place, predrill the holes, and then screw into place.

Flip your platform bed back over and prime it out.

I changed things around a little bit and made my platform bed out of 2x6's. I also used deck brackets in the middle and used 4 2x6's to support the middle of the bed. No MDF used in this one. I also trimmed mine out in a #2 pine and then stained it with a Golden Oak stain. I think it finished out pretty nicely. The entire bed cost me a total of $81.84 with material purchased at Home Depot. To see pictures you can go to my webpage and check em out. Are the sheets of MDF necessary? It seems like it would make the bed that much heavier if I ever needed to move it, as well as the possibility of it getting wet. Maybe just lay down a box spring over the 2x4's and build the lip high enough to conceal it?

MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard is paintable. You have to remember it is a porous substrate so you will need to prime it before painting. First off, DO NOT USE WATER BASED PRIMER(latex/acrylic). This will cause the MDF to swell and warp. You must prime with an OIL BASE PRIMER(alkyd). Once it's dry, you need to sand it lightly using a 220 grit paper or sanding block. Wipe it clean with a dry rag then coat it with any paint finish you like. Two finish coats is preferable.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) MDF is a waste-wood product that is made with fine wood fiber. Particleboard Particleboard is a waste-wood product that is made by mixing sawdust with adhesives. Although it will not bow or warp like plywood, it can swell and become unstable when exposed to water. THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PARTICLE BOARD AND MDF.

This is great. But MDF is not particle board! There is huge difference. Do not go buy particle board, it doesn't have the strength as MDF.

Thank-you for really keeping it affordable and simple.

"you will wan tot attach castors to the inside support beams as well." Can you find the spelling mistake?

mdf is medium density fibreboard, basically sawdust and wood fibres condensed and molded into a board...there about 5-6 painting steps needed to finish it properly including lots of sanding.
