So far I believe that I've seen better results with power walking. First off, I sweat quite a bit when power walking as opposed to my leisurely stroll. Secondly, I know it is a better cardio workout, which is beneficial to my overall health. Lastly, because it is more aerobic, I'm seeing better results in toning, especially in my thighs, buttocks and even in my tummy area. The downside is that I do not experience the relaxation I did with leisure walks. Strolling along one can really appreciate nature, clear one's mind and experience a great sense of peace. I don't get this experience with power walking.
Most studies have shown that walking at any pace is helpful. Doctors have found that walking improves one's overall mental health, lowers blood pressure, can temporarily improve the immune system and may possibly even minimize one's risk for certain diseases. It can even aid in weight loss for those who are more sedentary. But if you are already active, long strolls won't help much in losing weight. To burn calories quickly and tone the muscles, picking up the pace will make a huge difference.
