James Eugene Carrey was born on January 17, 1962 in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. He was the youngest of the clan born to Kathleen and Percy Carrey. His father was a Manic Depressive and his mother was a Hypochondriac who suffered from Depression. His siblings include John, Patricia and Rita. Always the "Class Clown", Carrey sent a resume for a job to Carol Burnett when he was ten years old. He also attempted to become a published poet, but failed. Finally, Carrey dropped out of high school to start a career in stand-up comedy in Canada. One of the little known facts about Jim Carrey is that comedian "I don't get no respect" Rodney Dangerfield (1921-2004) discovered him and hired Carrey to open his Las Vegas shows in 1979. However, two years later, he was out of work again after his act failed in Vegas. So, Jim Carrey went back home to Canada. He is quoted as saying, "I don't think human beings learn anything without desperation. Desperation is a necessary ingredient to learning anything or creating anything. Period. If you ain't desperate at some point, you ain't interesting."

Carrey auditioned to be a cast member of NBC's Saturday Night Live show, but he was turned down. In 1983, things were looking up again when Jim Carrey earned a bit part in the film "Rubberface." He also won the leading role in NBC's The Duck Factory show. In 1985, he got a part in the movie Once Bitten.

A little known fact about Jim Carrey is that he grew up in poverty. Now that he was earning a good living, he moved his parents from Toronto to Los Angeles. But, the show ended after just thirteen weeks. Both movies were flops, and Carrey was soon broke again. He sadly moved his parents back to Canada.

In the meantime, Jim Carrey found love, and he married Melissa Womer on March 28, 1987. Their daughter, Jane Erin Carrey was born in September of 1987.

What a great article! - I knew little of his most interesting life. I love triumph over tragedy stories. I think Liar Liar is my fav. I don't care for much slapstick or "dumb" comedy - but he's entertained this sour puss more than once.
