I love finding out-of-the-way restaurants that prove to be something special. My husband and I recently discovered such a place. It is called George's Family Restaurant - - in Yorktown, Virginia. This one should never be confused with a similarly named eatery in Poquoson (George's Restaurant). They in no way mirror one another.

George's Family Restaurant is located on Washington Memorial Highway directly in front of the Grafton Post Office and an adjacent small strip center. The freestanding building is not much to look at on the outside. However, my husband and I kept noticing that its parking lot was almost always full. That led us to believe that there must be something there worth exploring. So we did.

When you walk in the door, you notice that the décor is nothing fancy. It resembles that an old-fashioned truck stop diner from the 60's. But the owners had added a few special touches to give the dining area a feeling of home. There were lovely hanging basket dispersed throughout and a couple of Old English Garden style planters full of colorful silk plants and flowers.

The eatery offers table and chair seating as well as booths. I will admit that there was a bit of mish-mash decoration going on. The curtains on the windows went beautifully with the English Garden theme but the booths were colorful with a tropical fish theme. Once you look beyond that, however, the place is still very warm and friendly.

Dark wood paneling accents the walls with an ivory paint up above. The center area of the dining room is made to look much like a private dining area with wooden fence posts setting it apart from the rest of the room. Lighting is good since about two-thirds of the front of the restaurant is made up of windows that go halfway up the length of the wall. The English Garden curtains were pushed to one side to let the beautiful summer light inside.

The menu was simple, again much like that of an old truck stop diner. They serve breakfast all day and offer everything from eggs to bacon, sausage, or ham to home fries, pancakes, and more. You can even order a small breakfast steak if that strikes your fancy.

I love quaint out of the way places, too. This reminds me of a local place in downtown Dallas, GA. Great review, and the picture is making me hungry but it is after one in the morning, much to late to make one. LOL.

Just don't speed trying to get there! More than 20 miles an hour in Virginia - $1,000 - YIKES. Great review as usual, Charlotte!
