There is a whole lot of bad television programming out there. Worse, there's a whole lot of bad TV that gets unwarranted media coverage, attention and critic's praise for no good reason. Even worse still, the small majority of rather exceptional programming often gets overlooked and passed over. Let's put an end to all of this! Here is a listing of some of the most overrated and underrated TV shows, broken down into several categories.

Crime or Cop Shows

Overrated - The Sopranos - I understand this show is over and all I have to say is "Finally!" What better way to end a show that any honest-with-themselves-person will tell you has disappointed for at least the last three seasons, than to come up horribly, irreparably short in the finale. Meaningless, unfocused and overly extended story lines plagued the show during the last three or four years. Follow that up with an overly contrived and all-too-easy ending, that didn't tie anything together or show any conclusion. Yes, I got what they were hinting at. I wanted to see it.

Underrated - The Wire - The Wire delivers a gritty, well thought out look at the police/criminal world and all of the places in between. From the eyes of people on both side of the fence, learn about the politics of police work as well as the work that goes into setting up drug dealers for a big bust; while you also get to see the workings of an inner city crime organization. Watch the moral dilemmas facing kids, former criminals and desperate cops as they try to survive and find their place in the world or merely do their job. All of the stories intertwine excellently and the entire show is shot on location in the real life less than stellar sections of Baltimore.

What to watch?

Great article. I'm a little scared off the premise of "Dexter", but it does sound interesting. What do you think of "House"? I love it on one hand, but can't always take all the bitterness and dark humor. I watch it sometimes, but can't watch it too much. It's funny, I used to really eat up anything dark and edgy. In recent years I find I need to ration out those tv show or movies because they start to wear on me.

If you like "The Wire," check out another great TV show based in Baltimore - "Homicide - Life On The Street." It was based on a book by David Simon, who also created "The Wire," and who wrote "The Corner." One of the most underespected, as well as one of the greatest TV shows ever on network television. Even though it had a long run of seven seasons, it ended waaay too soon. Great article.

A great read. I have access in Chile to about half of the listed programs. I discovered The Shield about 5 weeks ago and watch it every night without fail. It's on at 1AM and 5AM here. It may be the most powerful, engaging show ever. Thanks for the info.

I strongly disagree with you on Entourage. I strongly agree with you on Huff. I strongly disagree about Showtime. They canceled Huff. My favorite new show is John from Cincinnati. Elliot

Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, American Dad are from the same set of people, so either or, they are fundamentally similar.

I couldn't agree with you more. Great article :-)

Good article, helped to find out about some shows that I haven't seen. I must disagree on the Simpsons however. It's a pretty funny program, although it may have lots it's spark on some of the new episodes due to the new writers. Big Love may have been good as a miniseries. Some shows should be produced that way because there isn't a lot of material or longevity for storylines that cannot expand much.

I agree with you 100 percent! However, i'd like to include the following cancelled shows to your underrated list: 1. louie c.k.'s "lucky louie"---its shocking out-of-the blue humor often made me spit out the contents of my mouth. 2. the next one took some patience to get into but after the third episode, it had me hooked. i'm talking about lisa kudrow's "comeback" series on the much overrated cable channel, HBO. 3. another show that i really enjoyed watching and was greatly disappointed when they pulled the plug on it---in mid-season!---was "homicide: life on the streets". yeah, i know i'm dating myself with this pick but...why not? set in the much under-represented city of baltimore, with an ethnically diversified cast and stellar directorial credits such as barry levinson and ted demme (to name a few), and great original story writing, one has to wonder what went wrong or better yet, why? 4. and while IÕm at it, i'd like to enlist yet another 90's oldie but goodie. Not

Good article and I agree with you on most. Are we just talking cableprograming here, because if not I would have added American Idle, er I mean Idol, to the list of overated shows.

I liked this article. I hate Family Guy and the Simpson's os so stale. Since you like tv, please read my articles on Project runway, Top Chef, America's Next ToP Model, and Top Design.
