Rapists Should Suffer

The punishment for rape must be increased. As it stands right now, according to the National Center for Policy Analysis, "anywhere in America, if a man rapes a woman, he should only expect to serve a prison term of 128 days." When you consider the years of shame, false guilt, post traumatic stress disorder, possible pregnancy and thoughts of suicide that a victim of rape goes through, 128 days of free shelter and food hardly seems fair or just for the rapist. The punishment simply does not fit the crime. It is understandable that there is prison overcrowding. It is understandable that unless reported immediately, rape is hard to prove. It is understandable that there are situations where women have reported a rape falsely and ruined men's lives. Most of these problems are valid problems in and of themselves that need to be solved another time. Our goal in America must be to have a firmer grasp on the brutality of rape and to create a punishment that truly fits the crime.

We must begin mandatory castration immediately after the conviction of rape (walk them out of the courtroom and into the operating room). The perpetrator must have a surgical implant, preferably done during the castration surgery, to track his every move for the rest of his life (not unlike a GPS system) and last but not least, the average prison sentence for rape must be at least triple what it is now. It is my experience that people will inherently do whatever they can get away with. People need to be terrified of raping another person. When the punishment is not worth committing the crime, people will stop committing the crime.

Mandatory castration immediately after conviction of rape will have several effects, the first of which is that rape will be associated with castration, which is not a pleasant thing to associate any action with. The second effect that it will have is that it will forever inhibit the perpetrator from committing the same crime. Furthermore, it will alert anybody who decides to have any kind of a romantic relationship with the perpetrator in the future that this person is, or has been, a rapist.

19-year-old Shi'ite girl was initially sentenced to prison and 90 lashes for being alone with a man not related to her. When her lawyer, Abdul Rahman al-Lahem, appealed the sentence, he was removed from the case, his license was suspended and the penalty was doubled to 200 lashes for the female. The seven men who raped her and her male companion got 2 -19 years. No news on how the raped man's punishment will be.

And what about mandatory removal of the ovaries of women who make false rape claims? And if a man is castrated and afterward the claim is proved false (about 40% are) how about executing the women?

This would be great in a fantasy world. As a Correctional Officer and seeing the rapist that come to prison and see how they were treated and what they become after release, no one thing we do to them as adults will do justice or change behavior. These things must be addressed in the adults or kids having kids and not knowing how to raise children. This and this alone will be the only thing that will change their response or behavior. We have to control them as youth before we can control them as adults.

Castration probably falls under the umbrella of "cruel and unusual" punishment. I agree that the punishment for rape is far too lax--and many sex offenders make a "career" out of it, destroying many people's lives. But I don't think castration is a viable punishment. Better rehabilitation, and (as you suggest) keeping track of offenders would probably be a good start. Very thought-provoking article.

Alyce, Good point. It really doesn't seem that the death penalty has deterred anybody from murder. I'll have to look for statistics on that (if I can find any without filing a freedom of information act).

Some guys were talking about a rape and their outrage and I suggested castration. They were agreed that rape was horrible, but said, "we can't take away his manhood". There was also that judge that did not send a guy to jail. He was too short and might have problems in prison. Of course his under age victim was probably much shorter than him. I do not know if the threat of castration would deter crimes; the death penalty has not stopped murders.

Harsh, maybe, but I think the lack of self control apparent in men of this nature is disgusting.

You are a harsh man, but I agree. If you don't know how to play with your toys, you get them taken away.

Now Castration to me, even as a Survivor from Rape and Sexual abuse is a little too much if you ask me. But I do 100% agree that more really needs to be done to Stop this. Maybe someday things will change?
