Although we are not exactly sure of where the poodle originated from, there is a common likelihood to refer to them as a “French Poodle”. Germany, Russia, France, and Spain all want to claim them as their own. The poodle is a well loved breed of dogs. They are known to be “water dogs” because of their love for swimming. They have been known to be entertainers used as circus dogs and in the Queen’s court in England. Believing that they are part of the spaniel family there is the possibility that they originated from Spain. The poodle is a highly intelligent, affectionate, and graceful dog that is a joy to those around him. He is playful, gentle, and easily trained. The poodle has a unique coat of fur and does not shed. People with allergies generally do well with a poodle. Poodles have an excellent longevity record and generally live 14 to 17 years. The poodle is commonly seen in 3 sizes, standard, miniature, and the toy. These dogs have been bred down over the years and there are now tiny toys and teacup poodles as well although the toy group remains the most popular. Standard poodles are generally 15 inches and above in height. Miniatures are classified as such by standing between 10 to 15 inches and toys stand less than 10 inches. Poodles are seen in a variety of colors coats such as apricot, white, black, brown, silver, cream, and blue. Due to their unique coarse and curly coat, the poodle needs frequent grooming. A weekly bathing, brushing, and teeth cleaning is recommended. Either an at home or professional clipping is advised every 8 to 10 weeks. He can either be clipped for the show ring or just have a basic, practical clip. Several different styles can be achieved based on the owner’s preference. Enough good cannot be said of this breed of dogs. Their proud, dignified gait and well proportioned body make them a very regal appearing animal. They are sensitive, good natured, and eager to please their owner. This makes them wonderful companions. They are almost human-like in their ability to understand and pick up words and signals. Of course, as you might have wondered, I do have a toy poodle. May yours bring you as much joy in your life as mine has to me.
