As a self-proclaimed popular music lyric master I was excited to hear about the prospect of a game show starting this summer where contestants competed to see who was more knowledgeable about lyrics to popular songs. When I found out there would be TWO shows like this I thought, even better! After all, it's not like there is a huge selection of interesting and entertaining programs on tv in the summer. I counted down to this week and eagerly sat down to see how these shows were going to work. Although both shows are obviously based on the same premise (knowing lyrics to popular songs), they go about this in two very different ways. Here is a breakdown of how the shows work and some important aspects of both.

"The Singing Bee" on NBC (Tuesday, 9:30pm EST)

Background:

According to the NBC website this show is produced by Phil Gurin and Robert C. Horowitz, who are listed for their work on the Miss Universe Franchise and Super Bowl Greatest Commercials Top 40 Countdown respectively. The host for the show is Joey Fatone of N'Sync fame. Their tagline is "You don't have to sing it well. You just have to sing it right."

How it works:

Great article! I love "The Singing Bee," but I am partial to Joey Fatone.

I'm loving Lyrics. I think some of the Idol Wanna-be's are showing up.

Pen, I think it is so interesting how two people can watch the same shows and find the opposite one confusing. I guess that's why they can have so many shows like this on the air at the same time, right? Just FYI, the Lyrics show is only a half hour as well. They just have it on two nights a week. I completely understand about not committing to a game show though. That's the thing I like about both of these shows. They are fun while you are sitting down and watching, but you don't have to feel like you are really missing anything if you don't tune in one week. :)

Hey, thanks for reading my article I haven't watched Lyric's but I'll tune in, I still think I'd prefer the Singing Bee because it's short and sweet. I'm not sure but I'm guessing The Lyrics show is an hour long and runs for 2 days and I just can't commit to a game show that way. The rules also seem confusing, with The Singing Bee the games change but the format's basically the same. I'll watch Lyrics tonight though.

I saw your article Lenora. :) The background info on Wayne Brady was fun. I gave the "Singing Bee" another chance last night and they had a different "game" that they played for the pair round, but I still couldn't really get into it. I think I will stick with "Lyrics". Let's face it, if you want a cheesy music show go to FOX right?

I did an article on the lyrics show. I trusted it to be the better of the two. Honestly, I missed both, but with "dancing bees" I just don't know. What ever happened to "Name that Tune" anyway?
