In a previous article I explained an interesting thing that was going on with a web site called helpmybabylive.com.

Well, it seems it was all an elaborated prank. One of bad taste at least for me but an interesting one. With this type of web sites you can see in real time what the Internet can do. It also shows the risks involved in gathering of the information on the Net.

According to this web site "an anonymous couple" was pledging to abort their baby if they were not able to raise at least US $50,000. At the time I wrote that article they claimed that they have already gathered $10,200 in donations. Then, after a while that amount climbed to 13000. That was the last time I check it up. They also said after some time that Paypal has shut their account (where they supposedly were receiving donations) and that they were working on selecting an alternative payment processor.

They also had a section where they published all emails received in regard to their proposition. You could see there a lot of the hate mail sent and the differences of opinion among people wit and without a pro-life or pro-choice orientation. One of the recurrent themes in those emails was the claim that this web site was a scam, which could have been if actual money was involved.

Today, I checked helpmybaby.com. The following message appears there "LOOK AT WHAT YOU MADE ME DO. There was never a baby, you got fooled, no money was collected. 200,000 people got pranked. Suck it. tell us what you thought" The message is embedded in some really disturbing pictures of a baby with blood all over his (or her) body and some pictures of biological material such as placenta, blood and different types of biological tissues.

As you can see from this statement, the Web site claim that it was a prank, that no baby was involved, and no money was ever collected. They do not elaborate on the reasons why they put up with this elaborated scheme. Different interpretations are possible here.

I think the idea may have been borrowed from savetoby.com. "Toby" is/was a rabbit that was held for randsom a few years ago. People were supposed to make donations to see Toby live, but if Toby's owner did not receive enough money by a certain date then he would kill and eat Toby. I checked the website after the execution date and Toby was still alive and still (supposedly) generating money for his owner (the due date was pushed back).

I commented on their website when you first wrote the article on this story. On it I tild them a few things including that they may just be taking everybody's money. I hope they get prosecuted. It is certainly actionable.
