What was deemed to be just a side-story of one of the adventures of the Fantastic Four, Marvel Zombies became a powerhouse franchise in its own right. Originally, it started out as somewhat of a crossover from the Ultimate Marvel Universe. Mr. Fantasic of the Ultimate Universe got teleported to Earth-2149 one of the many different planet Earths. This one is basically the Earth full of zombie versions of the various Marvel superheroes and supervillains.

Mr. Fantasic gets saved by Magneto one of the few survivors that hasn't been infected. He basically sends Mr. Fantastic and other uninfected survivors back to the Ultimate Universe. Also, the zombie version of the Fantastic Four escape but only to get incarcerated within the Baxter Building where they can't harm, infect, nor eat anybody else.

The story behind Marvel Zombies was that an alternate version of Sentry that has been zombified came to this dimension looking for more people to devour. In response the other heroes fight Sentry but get infected and then become flesh-hungry zombies. However, they maintain their personalities and powers. But, at the same time they gave into their hunger causing them to eat any other living human or being.

Though it was just one adventure, Marvel Comics decided to make a mini-series about this turn of events. There are three series that are linked to each other: Marvel Zombies, Marvel Zombies: Dead Days, and Marvel Zombies vs. The Army of Darkness.

Marvel Zombies revolves around the heroes and villains who became zombies such as: Iron Man, Captain America (Colonel America in Marvel Zombies), Spiderman, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Incredible Hulk, Cyclops, Iceman, Nightcrawler, Beast, Ms. Marvel, Dr. Strange, Mystique, Quicksilver, Daredevil, Elekra, Storm, Giant Man, Wasp, Green Goblin, Fantastic Four, Thor, Venom, Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, and any other hero or villain you can think of.

Did You Know?
In the beginning, the Punisher was meant to be the only survivor.

The cover art for the Marvel Zombie series is the best, especially the Mary Jane/Spiderman cover.
