The mistreatment of women has been a plague to this world since the beginning of society. Only in the last century, or more significantly in the last half century, has it begun to show signs of positive progression towards gender equality. There are many factors that seem to hold back the progression, but none seem more powerful than The Holy Bible itself. The Bible is the single most influential book in the history of civilization. Genesis is probably the most read part of this sort of how-to book of life because it explains the creation of the world and of human kind. This part of the book has been somewhat reduced in power because of scientific discovery. However, the underlying messages may live on forever. The Bible, and most significantly Genesis, has many underlying messages that suggest the inferiority of women. First of all, in the second account of the creation, The Bible explains the creation of the woman. "So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man (Genesis 2: 21, 22).

At first glance, this seems to be a clever explanation for why the man's rib structure is shaped differently than the woman. In fact, this could have been the purpose of this section. However, whatever its intentions were, are almost shadowed by the particular way it seems to display the woman as dependent on man. It may not come out and say plainly that woman is inferior to, or dependent on man, but when read, it could certainly provide some sort of justification for a man to treat a woman less than a fellow man. The fact that woman was created from man, suggests that woman was an afterthought and would not exist if it were not for the sacrifice of the man's rib. Also, the woman is brought to the man, as it almost seems like a gift. Therefore, a man who reads The Bible could be no more than two pages into it and could immediately develop a feeling of superiority over women.

Takeaways
  • Genesis suggests gender inequality.
  • Women are inferior according to The Bible.
  • Advancement of Society requires advancement in the way we teach The Bible.
Did You Know?
A reader only has to read 2 pages into the bible to see a suggestion of women's inferiority to men.

As an avid Bible reader, it is my opinion that articles like this mix up cultural information shown in the Bible with the messages of the Bible. It was not until reading the Bible as a young woman that I recognized my value as a woman. I had a college professor who said similar things in a class on the Psychology of the Female experience, using the Bible as her stated source of oppression. It certainly can be the source, and for many, is used as a reason to sustain gender inequality. (Look at what is going on in the Texas case with the children.) But this is true only for those who choose to use parts of it because they want to justify this inequality. Equally, those who condemn gender inequality will also use only parts of the Bible to state their case. After having this college class, in which I wrote my term paper on the equality of women, using the Bible as my main source and getting an A on the paper with an apology from the professor, this has remained a passionate topic fo

I find it humorous how religion is so degrading to women, yet women are oftentimes the backbone of the entire world. Women abandon their last names so they can be "given away" as gifts to a man. Then they agree to have children via painful childbirth to continue the human species with said hubby. They bleed for an entire week each month so they can have the kids in the first place. They are blamed for the source of "corruption", i.e. the NATURAL and INEVITABLE sexual arousal. And despite this power, we are placed in second. Religion is basically just telling you that you have a 50/50 chance of being treated as a normal citizen. I apologize if I came off as a feminist, but the topic gets me fired up and I debate like crazy to vent.

The purpose of authority in our lives is protection, not limitation. A good analogy is that of a police officer who has authority over you as a civilian yet his purpose is to protect and Serve. Within the protection of a husband's love and care, a woman can be free to operate in her own sphere without the pressure of being ultimately responsible for all the decisions made in the family. She takes part in them, but the responsibility doesn't lie on her shoulders, but on those of her husband. Your understanding of Genesis has clearly arisen from starting from the conclusion "Woman are inferior" then working backwards into Genesis to come to the same conclusion. IF you actually studied it from a non biased point you would see the true meaning of a woman and her uniqueness in Creation.

Great analysis of how Genesis has a strong tone of womens' inferiority to men. The New Testament is no better, with a scripture that tells women to obey their husbands. Since I do not believe in the supernatural, I am an equal opportunity rejecter of religions :P

Somehow you morphed from Genesis being able to be construed as implying the inferiority of women, to "consists of stories that blatantly teach that women are to be inferior to me." The latter is utterly and obviously false. To then generalize this possibility of Genesis being misconstrued into a statement about the entire Bible is absurd, especially considering the fact that the prominence and significance of women in the New Testament was unheard of in any literature anywhere near the time, and the influence on the Bible converted the place of women in Europe from property to equals under the law.
