The most important thing to consider about family summer fun is that every member of your family has input, everyone is supposed to enjoy the outings. Make sure you take everyone's likes and dislikes into consideration. Some people prefer a warm climate, some prefer the mountains, some prefer water, etc. Communication is the first key! Also don't fall for fads, trends or other people's opinions. Just because someone you work with came back from Europe raving about the time they had, don't have it make you feel guilty if it's not in your time slot or budget to do the same thing.

Don't be discouraged by anything. Maybe you can't co-ordinate time off from work with your partner to go on a vacation. Maybe you have small children that would not be feasible to drag on a 22 hour plane ride. Maybe it's not in your budget to take the whole family surfing in Hawaii. None of these things mean that you can't have summer fun!

The Internet is a great tool - use it. Summer fun comes in many forms. First start with the time frame.

If you only have a day available, see what towns/counties/cities are in your area you have never been to. If you live close to a state line, you can look for towns that are close to adjoining state lines, so you could still go out-of-state for a day!

For a day trip try key words such as: amusement park, nature trail, park, lake, museum, cave, historical site, beach. There are also many family friendly venues that offer concerts during the summer months, many of them at very reasonable prices.

If you want to stay somewhere over night, you can expand your geographical search area a little bit. Just keep in mind you don't want to spend too many hours driving, where you will be too tired to enjoy the actual destination. Some good key words to try are bed and breakfast and historical inns. Those places usually have a website that includes information on what there is to do in the area.
