Male Menopause and the Midlife Crisis
When the word menopause is used it is normally in reference to a female who is going through the change of life as it is sometimes called. But what about men? We've heard that they often go through a mid-life crisis. This stage is usually characterized by purchasing a red sports car
and/or leaving one's wife for a young buxom blonde. But is there really such as thing as male menopause?
Although more research is needed studies indicate that it certainly is a real possibility. As men age testosterone levels drop. This results in loss of muscle, erectile dysfunction, depression and even hot flashes. Men often deny the possibility of a mid-life menopause simply because they don't want to identify with a condition that has primarily centered around females. Even in the medical community male menopause is not a widely accepted concept.
Several clinical trials have been done but research continues. Signs of low testosterone levels include low sex drive, lack of energy, erectile dysfunction, lack of strength and depression. However it is important to note that it is normal for testosterone levels to vary in men. Age, diet and exercise are all factors to be considered in varying degrees of testosterone levels. Good nutrition is important in maintaining healthy levels of testosterone. A good diet includes plenty of proteins and carbohydrates. A man who drinks alcohol and has low testosterone levels may want to consider lowering his alcohol intake since alcohol decreases testosterone levels.
Hormone replacement is an option for men just as it is with women but there are both benefits and risks to be considered. Hormone replacement of supplemental testosterone can restore sexual function, muscle strength, prevent bone loss, improve memory and may even protect against heart disease. As previously mentioned hormone replacement can also involve risks. For example, too much testosterone can cause aggression, sleep apnea and may present an increased risk of stroke as well as other risks.
