For many years, I have used Microsoft Office applications. I am definitely not a fan of it in any way. Most large and small companies however, require the use of this product because it is universal. You can almost say that I have a deep love and hate relationship with Microsoft Office. I've been looking for a cheaper and more stable office application that will not give me so much grief. Gladly, I came across three great alternatives that function very well.

Google Docs & Spreadsheets is a great alternative to anyone that needs to create a Word document or Excel Spreadsheet. You will not have to download any software in order to use the application. Just simply create or log into your Google account and start creating. Another great feature of this Microsoft alternative is that you can even upload existing Word or Excel documents with no problem. Sharing your docs once they are created are even simpler. You have the option to email an invitation instantly with anyone that has an email address. I absolutely love the fact that I am able to view and edit my docs at the same time others are doing the same. We can chat about the changes and see each other's revisions. There are so many great features that come with this application and it is completely free.

Zoho Office Suite is another free Microsoft alternative that I came across on my search. It is also completely free and totally web based. You do not have to download any software in order to use the programs. It includes a Word processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation tool, Online Meeting application, and other very useful applications. When I first came across this program, I was in complete shock. I could not believe that I was able to get access to all these wonderful tools for free. The best thing about using a web based program is that you have access to it from any internet connection. That makes it extremely convenient.

Another great alternative option -- one that many long-time writers will know very well -- lies in WordPerfect Office. Better than Word for long documents, building chapters, tables of contents and indices, and available at a lower price across the board. I've found it works with Microsoft Office files pretty well and you can try it free from Corel's website.
