While there are many benefits that have been brought out in the past about gaining a Catholic high school education, there are negatives that are commonly overlooked. There are many disadvantages that a student will face once entering college if he or she has gone through the Catholic school system.

There are many Catholic schools that will teach their students that they are on a higher ground then students that went to public schools. This causes many Catholic school students to be arrogant once they get into college. They have the feeling that they are better off going into college then their public school pears, and this adds to a separation between the two types of students.

This separation will echo into the social circles that a product of the Catholic schools system will put himself or herself in. College students that passed through the Catholic school system will place themselves in social circles that also passed through the Catholic school system. These students will then have a disadvantage when having to communicate with students that had gone through the public school system.

Most Catholic schools are made up of white suburban students. There are many Catholic school students that realize that they had never been around very many minorities, or people of lower economic status. Once they get into college, they will be at a disadvantage when communicating with minorities, or with people of a lower economic status.

Since most Catholic schools are small, the former Catholic school students will find that they are overwhelmed once they get into college. They will find that they no longer have the recognition that they did when they were in a smaller school. There are many times that this will cause a feeling of insignificance. This can cause for many other types of disadvantages such as depression and a lowering of the grades during the first few semesters.

I disagree that there are only white students, my son's school is very diverse. As far as Humility that is something that is discussed in length. You article does not depict the true catholic school education.

You forgot to mention another disadvantage of Catholic schools.....they are now so secularized that they do not teach TRUE Catholicism any longer.

Arrogance often comes with youth in general. Any Catholic school worth its salt will teach humility of spirit rather than arrogance.

I think going to public school my entire life has shaped me for the better. My area is relatively well-off, but still extremely diverse. One of the elementary schools in my area is the most diverse school in the nation, with 25% white students, 25% black students, 25% Asian students, and 25% Spanish students. When I got to Rutgers University, another very diverse school, I noticed that I was better prepared than some others for the social interactions that were to come. That said, two of my siblings attended public school and both are intelligent, tolerant individuals. This to me suggests that this sort of tolerance is determined in a large part by your family upbringing. In any event, I want my kids to go to public school. I want them to see people of all different shades and be able to appreciate the beauty that is in all life.

Interesting article I agree with you-Robbie B. every individual is different. I think whether you go to public or Catholic school what matters most is how you take the education you received and make it work for you!
