As the mother of a 3 year old with clean and smooth dreadlocks, I have had plenty of experience with this hairstyle. Ever since I was a child, I always had a fascination with this hairstyle and had many friends who had it done. I even helped a few with the dred maintenance along the way. I have studied many different pieces of literature on the facts about dredlocks as well as the creation of dreads. There are many different spellings for this hairstyle, so you will see more than one used throughout this explanation. Here, I will take you on the journey to clean, smooth dreadlocks.

When my 3 year old started to become overwhelmed each day at hair combing time, I decided it was time for a style that involved no combing. The only permanent one is, of course, dreadlocks. There are braids, but that would involve having to take them out and comb her hair eventually and she would not like that, so I opted for the dreadlocks, as she is very tenderheaded, if that's even considered a real word.

Now, I will share how to create the nice clean, smooth dreadlocks, no matter your hair texture. Even those with straight or fine hair can achieve dreadlocks. It does not matter how thick, thin, curly, or straight your hair is. With these simple methods, your dredlocks will form in no time. The term "partner" will refer to the person who is creating the dredlocks on someone else's head. Receiver will refer to the person who is getting the dreadlocks.

Materials:
Sea Salt
water (purified works best, if you can use it)
24 ounce spray bottle
Clarifying Shampoo
Vinegar
Baking Soda
Beeswax
Rat Tail Comb
Small Black Rubber bands
willing and patient partner

It will work for any hair style or type. Some just take longer to lock up. Good luck. :-)

Alyce, I use the vinegar/baking soda, too and I don't have dreads either. It does make the scalp feel and look so clean and fresh. It also rubs away dandruff and dry scalp. It's great. :-)

Recently have considered dreads, a style I never tried. Don't know that I'd like the beeswax and locking solution, but I do think I will try a baking soda/vinegar cleansing. Getting the scalp that clean sounds great.

Thanks Chris. Yes, it's a pain, but it looks really cool when finished. :-)
