You know it's been about 4 months since my husband's spinal fusion surgery and the look of pain on his face invokes so much anger and hate within me. It's hard to believe that present day surgery could be so barbaric and dis-advanced. With people walking around with artificial hearts, insulin pumps and computers hooked to their brains that allow them to type online, it's hard to believe that a well educated neurosurgeon can only think to shove bone in the place that once harbored a cushion, pad like substance. The only thing these doctors can think of is to place metal and screws, common items found in the average persons garage in someone's back to "ease" their pain.

Don't be fooled by big words such as "spondylolisthesis" This simply means you have fractured, cracked or broken bone in your back. Seems like it took more time coming up with the name spondylolisthesis than it did to fix the ailment. Do you have Degenerative Disc Disease? This means that the little cushion between the bones in your back is dying. All of these long drawn out terms is to basically draw your attention away from the fact that they have no idea how to fix you. The best comparison that I can give for Back Surgery is a kid hitting a pinata, sometimes you get candy on the first swing, sometimes you get nothing. This meaning sometimes people take very well to back surgery and are nearly instantly cured, others are screwed, quite literally and it's possible the pain will become worse or stay the same.

Other than surgery what can you do? There are other options out there for you such as, physical therapy if you qualify. Spinal Decompression if you qualify and if you are lucky ,possible disc replacement surgery which was just recently approved. But the most likely approach you will find your attending physician pushing on you is lovely little pain pills. These beautiful little pain pills will shut you up and when your body becomes immune to them they will just increase your dosage or prescribe you stronger type. And this is usually the pattern that takes place until your popping five Demerol pills a day and sucking on a Demerol pop to even function.

A picture of a spinal fusion, done with rods, pins and spacers. I typical resolution to an on-going problem for many people. With less than satisfactory results for most.

Great article! Sorry to hear about your husband, I have never personally known anyone who has gone through it so I can't offer my 2 cents. And about the pain pills? I can't blame you for your anger where that is concerned. And they blame people for being addicted to the stuff when they push it on them. Good luck!

A good friend of mine had one back surgery when we were in high school. Told him it would be all he needed. Then it got bad and he had to have another one... then 6 months later another one.. it's really ridiculous. I'm sorry to hear about your husband's back. My fiance has some major back problems (his whole body is falling apart because he used to be a boxer). He doesn't have health insurance to fix it but man, when he is able to someday I'm going to be sooo nervous. He used to have a pill problem way back when too so giving crazy doses of painkillers is not something we want because it can become addictive and he's already been through that battle once. Bleh... I hope your husband gets better! Great article!

There has been a lot of back trouble in my family and we've tried everything. So far the injections have been a big, painful joke. My brother tried for 30 years to get help, and nobody would operate on him. He finally found a surgeon who did operate and it helped him, but of course it's no cure. I was told for five years that the pain in my leg and hip that kept me awake at night and made it hard to walk was coming from my back. LOOONNNGG story. Thankfully, I finally found a doctor who said my hip was worn out and needed to be replaced. I had it done and it was the best thing I ever did. My 41-year-old son is going through the same thing now. He is about to try an inversion therapy table, as it has come highly recommended to relieve pain from spinal compression of nerves. Hopefully it will help him. Suppose it would help your husband as well?

You would think there would be more advances there. Back pain isn't one of the many medical topics I've researched lately. I have in the past. I'll have to look at that. Very interesting and thought-provoking.
