Serendipity 3 is home to the most famous dessert in New York City. It's been shown in movies, visited by stars, royalty and dessert lovers from all over the world.In 1954 Stephen Bruce, Calvin Holt and Preston "Patch" Caradine opened Serendipity 3. It's part restaurant, part soda fountain, coffeehouse and general store. This place is a lot of things for such a small building, almost hidden in the heart of the Upper East Side.
They serves meals, but their biggest and best contribution to society is their desserts. Desserts that have people waiting in line for 1 to 2 hours almost daily and sometimes up to 3 hours on the weekends. And the king of their desserts is Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. This delightful, frozen, chocolaty confection is truly a chocolate lovers heaven. Concocted of 14 kinds of chocolate, cocoa, whipped cream and ice, then ground into a rich slush. Served in a huge fishbowl shaped goblet with a spoon and 2 straws. Yes, its so big, even the most extreme chocolate lover will be willing to share!
Frrrozen Hot Chocolate has been the dessert of choice for New York citizens and visitors for over 50 years. The secret recipe was guarded as closely as most national secrets. Then in their 50th year, the recipe was released. There are two versions you can find on the Internet. One gives measurements and ingredients, but no brand names. The other one does list some brand names.
If you live in New York City, or have plans to visit there, this is a stop you have to make. Unless you're one of those rare people that don't care for chocolate or desserts. But if you're like me and know your chances of getting to New York are slim, this recipe is your chance to taste chocolate heaven on earth.
I used the recipe with the brands listed. I was so glad I tried it. There are mixed reviews of the other recipe. From what I've seen it looks like about 60% of those that tried it, liked it. It appears to be one of those things you either love or hate. But for me, I loved it. My sons loved it. My sweet tooth and chocolate addiction adored it.
