Some call Rhode Island by the diminutive title "Little Rhody" but others, especially residents , prefer the moniker that suits Rhode Islands seaside geography, "The Ocean State". Colt State Park For a small state, Rhode Island has a considerable number of state parks, among them Colt State Park, in Bristol, Rhode Island. If you decide on this Labor Day picnic site in Rhode Island, you may want to begin your outing with a brief trip about the town of Bristol. The town is very historic and extraordinarily patriotic. Bristol holds the oldest Fourth of July parade in the nation and continues to mark its national pride all year long by using a red/white/blue line down the center of its Main St. instead of the Highway Dept white or yellow found in most towns. The rest of town is equally proud of its historic character. You really can enjoy a short stroll through the downtown area to check out its many tourist oriented shops or take a short drive to admire the many historic homes that adorn the streets of Bristol. But then on to Colt State Park !

At Colt State Park you will find lots of room to spread yourselves out to enjoy the day. In all there are six separate picnic grounds each provided with numerous picnic tables for public use. There are also an amazing ten ball fields if you happen to bring along equipment and your extended family. You can sample the bay view from the seat of your bike as you pedal along the 4 miles of trails that skirt the shore or walk similar paths on foot. There is even plenty of room to toss a Frisbee or fly a kite.
