Once a week pool owners should "shock", or superchlorinate their pool to keep algae at bay, rid the water of contaminants and keep the water balanced for safe swimming. After caring for my backyard pool for over 8 years now, I have tried several different brands of pool shock treatments. This year, I have turned again to my favorite, Pool Breeze Shock Treatment and Superchlorinator, to keep my pool clear and balanced for a safe swimming season.
The granular chemical treatment is made of 68% Calcium Hypochlorite (with a minimum of 65% being Chlorine) and 32% other ingredients. The high level of Chlorine in the Pool Breeze Shock Treatment and Superchlorinator is one of the main reasons I use this brand. Some brands do not offer as high of a Chlorine content, which ultimately makes you use more of the product to achieve similar results.
A 1lb. bag of Pool Breeze Shock Treatment and Superchlorinator will treat 10,000 gallons of pool water by bringing it to 5-10ppm of chlorine, sanitizing the water and controlling algae growth. The 1lb. Bag will cost $2.50-$3.00 per bag depending on where it is purchased. Most pool supply stores sell the product as individual bags, in cases of 12, and cases of 24 bags.
When using other pool shock treatments with a lower chlorine content, you will need to use more than the recommended 1lb per 10,000 gallons of water. When using the Pool Breeze product, I use 3 bags to superchlorinate my pool. When I used off brand pool shock treatments from Target and Wal-Mart, I had to use 6 bags to achieve the same desired chlorine content. I firmly believe you will get a better variety of quality pool shock treatments options when is it is purchased at a pool supply store. Reading the label to ensure the main ingredient is Calcium Hypochlorite is extremely important. Many off brand pool shock products use fillers that do not aid in the sanitization of your pool.
