The Grunion Run is a wonderful fishing sport; however, it may be a bit more active. Basically, the Grunion Run includes fishing for the wonderful Grunions. However, unlike other fishes which you may fish with a fishing pole, the California Law does not allow any bait, hook, poles, nets, etc. So what kind of tools are you allowed? None, you're supposed to catch the Grunion with your hands. Of course, this results in a very physical activity where everyone is running all over the place. Because the Grunions are extremely slippery, it's definitely very hard to catch one although there are plentiful of them coming up the stream.
Let me give you some insight to the grunions. Their name generally comes from the Spanish from the grunting noise they make coming up the stream in San Diego, California in order to reproduce. They truly are a sight to see with their silvery gleam in the moonlight as they all race up the stream against an impossible tide. This silvery fish isn't as big as you would imagine, and thus, a lot harder to catch with your hands; generally, they only average five inches long.
If this seems of interest, and you should try it or at least watch them come upstream once as it is a beautiful sight, there are a couple of steps you need to follow before you can proceed in the Grunion Run. First off, you need a fishing license from the California Department of fish and games, and secondly, you can only go fishing at the legal period of time which happens to be May through September.
The best places to go for the Grunion Run would be, of course, San Diego, California in Del Mar beach where there are plentiful of Grunions around. There are other hot spots around that you may also want to consider like the Mission Beach which is also a wonderful spot to go. You may want to research on the spots closest to you that would be the most convenient to go to.
