Ultimate frisbee is one of those games that is gaining popularity throughout the country. Many locations in the country will be having tournaments during the summer months. Ultimate frisbee is a game you will see played on many beaches, so what is this game? The easiest explanation is that it is a combination of many different games. There are aspects of football, basketball, and rugby combined into ultimate frisbee. Unlike the last of those three sports though, there is actually no contact permitted in ultimate frisbee. The other unique aspect of the game is that there are no referees in ultimate frisbee. Instead the players themselves are responsible for enforcing the rules.

So what is the goal of ultimate frisbee? It's rather simple, the goal is to score more points than your opponents in a timed game. So of course the next question is how do teams score points? Well there are two point values they can get. They can complete a pass from anywhere within the playing field to a teammate in the scoring endzone for one point. If they complete a long pass from the endzone they are defending to the endzone they score in they score two points. The only way a team can move down the field is by passing the frisbee, they can not run with it. When a player receives a pass they have ten seconds to pass the frisbee to a teammate or the other team receives the frisbee and goes on offense. Other ways the frisbee changes teams is if there is an incompletion, or an interception.

Takeaways
  • Ultimate frisbee is a fast paced game that incorporates concepts from other sports.
  • Unlike football and rugby, there is no contact permitted in ultimate frisbee.
  • Unlike basketball and football you can not run with the frisbee
