Anyone who has ever attended school can remember at least a couple of nights when they had so much homework that they never thought they would get it all done. I have had more than my fair share of those nights. Anyone who has kids that are in school now can probably say that there is a lot more homework being given now than when they were in school. If you have ever asked your child's teacher, they have all probably told you that they do not enjoy giving homework. So, why exactly do they give so much homework if they do not enjoy doing so? There are many reasons, none of which are because they enjoy it.

One reason that teachers give homework is because the class sizes are larger today than they were in the past. With larger class sizes, there are more distractions and less time to concentrate on the purpose of the class, which is learning. The parts of the lessons that are not covered in class, or the assignments that there isn't time to complete become homework so that they are completed.

Another reason that teachers give homework is because there is a certain amount of material that is required to be covered by the school district. If the required material is not covered, the children in the class will not be able to go on to the next grade. Any part of the teacher's lesson plans that is not covered during a day in class must be done outside of class in order to get all of the required material covered. In some situations, this can be caused by the larger class sizes. In other situations, it can be caused by an inexperienced teacher or an increase in the amount of required material.

One more reason that teachers give homework is because one of the best ways to learn something new or to improve a newly acquired skill is practice. Studying for a spelling test is a common homework assignment for kids that are in all grades. Another good example of homework for the purpose of learning something new or improving a newly acquired skill is studying the night before a test. Although the facts being quizzed on the test have been learned in class, studying the night before the test can help to retain the information that will be needed on the test.
