Safe Craft Recipe for Homemade Edible Face Paint for Toddlers

While I wouldn't recommend giving toddlers a spoon and a big okay, this homemade face paint recipe contains only edible ingredients. If they happen to taste some, it will be no big deal. Except for maybe a funny or sour face!

The safe craft recipe is very easy to make, because it contains so few ingredients. These ingredients are probably right there in your baking cabinet. If not, these are cheap items easily found and purchased from the local grocery store or discount retailer.

This is a homemade recipe that can be used to paint the entire face of a toddler or a child. This recipe will give good coverage, and is best used for large areas of the face, as opposed to detailing.

Safe Craft Recipe for Homemade Edible Face Paint for Toddlers

1 box of liquid food coloring
1 tablespoon of solid cooking shortening
2 tablespoons of cornstarch

Those are the only ingredients needed for this recipe. The recipe should make enough to cover the entire face of a child, with some extra.

Equipment for Making Safe Homemade Face Paint for Toddlers

You need some containers for mixing, some mixing spoons, and and some covers for the containers.

You will also need some individual make up sponges. The sponges will be used to gently paint the toddler's face.

How to Make the Safe Homemade Face Paint for Toddlers

Measure the shortening and the corn starch. Blend the shortening and corn starch together to form a very smooth mixture.

Add drops of food coloring to make the paint colors. Add more than one color to make even more colors.

For a quick refresher on color mixing:

red and blue makes purple
blue and yellow makes green
yellow and red makes orange

Also try adding a red to purple, or blue to purple, or red to orange, to make a rainbow of colors.

If you want brown, mix red and green.

Applying the Face Paint to the Toddler

Use the make up sponge to apply the paint to the toddler's face. For some areas, use your fingertips to blend in the paint.

This recipe works best for whole face painting. Store any extra in a covered container.

It is so easy to make and use, that you can pull this recipe out any time!
