Did you know that there are some 39 islands in Narragansett Bay, the expansive body of water that encircles the state of Rhode Island? Some islands, like Newport and Block Island, are big summer resorts, offering a plethora of sightseeing adventures. Others, like Rabbit and Lime Rock, can only be viewed by boat or kayak, but are definitely deserving of a look. It is this diversity of the islands that attracts visitors from around the world to chart a course and discover the wonders that string along Rhode Island's coastline.

NEW SHOREHAM (more commonly known as Block Island)
Block Island, with its Victorian charm, is a popular summer resort, offering a rich history, miles of sandy beaches and a wealth of activities, from fishing, boating, biking, swimming and walking to some of the best bird watching in the country. Before heading off to explore the island, stop in at the Chamber of Commerce on Water Street in the center of town for a map and information on hiking trails, nature paths and best roads for biking.

On the southern side of the island is the famous Southeast Lighthouse, which, not too long ago, was moved back from the eroding cliffs. Not to be missed is the breathtaking views from the top of Mohegan Bluffs, which rise abruptly to a height of 200 feet above the sea and stretch for nearly three miles along the island's southern shore. On the opposite end of the island, visit the recently restored North Light or enjoy a hike in the Greenway, a network of trails that leads from the island's heart near Beacon Hill to Black Rock, through areas of both public and private lands. The Greenway connects beautiful natural flora and vegetation with specific island sites and well-known locations, including The Enchanted Forest, The Turnip Farm, The Old Mill Site, Dodge Cemetery and Rodman's Hollow. Follow the Clayhead Nature trails, a walker's paradise, and see the island as the first settlers did, untouched and beautiful.

When it comes time to cool off, head to any one of Block Island's more than 350 freshwater ponds (from natural springs) or 17 miles of saltwater beaches. All the beaches are free on Block Island.
