Why are there scammers out there? Is it because they are heartless and greedy? I'd say its because there is always someone who will fall for their story. It's not hard to know a scam. There are ways of finding out. Most likely if its the first time you are hearing about an opportunity you would not know what to think of it.

So how do you avoid getting scammed? If its too good to be true then it probably is. But there can also be some genuinely good opportunities out there. You won't want to miss out on something that is genuinely good just because you are too careful. Its always good to be careful so why not do some research and see what other people think? Its going to take less time than the hassle you will get to be refunded your money from some scammers (if you ever get refunded) and it wouldn't cost you anything to ask. The internet is so big there is always someone, somewhere who has had some experience of some sort with the opportunity in question.

Where would you start? With Google of course. Or your favourite search engine. Just type in the name of the opportunity name and see what comes up in the results. Usually, with a quick skim over, you can just tell from the results if the program has good reviews or bad ones. A closer look is probably going to give you confirmation. There may also be a mix. You will have to decide whether or not such an opportunity is for you depending on what is said about the program and if it will affect you in any way. Also do searches with the query "opportunity name + scam" and "opportunity name + opinions".

This isn't the only place you can find information about scams or misleading opportunities. You can also ask on internet forums related to the topic or message boards or high traffic Q and A sites like Yahoo Answers. Some forums even have sections dedicated to finding or 'busting' scams. You will most often get back a response from someone who has used the program and they are either going to be satisfied and recommend it to you or dissatisfied and "burn" the program. Always get a second opinion and if you want to be sure, get a third.
