One of the longest Bike trails in the US is the Katy Trail. From Machens to Clinton, Missouri, the trail is over 225 miles long. The actual mileage starts in St. Charles, Missouri.

Most of the year around you can find hikers and bike riders along the trail. It is unique because it passes through many towns and villages. These provide motels, hotels, and bed and breakfasts for the travelers. There are also camp sites provided at different locations, too.

www.BikeKatyTrail.com provides an excellent web site that answers all types of information about the trail. It even has a map and mileage chart. The trail for the most part follows the Missouri River. It runs along the south side of the river from east to west. There are three Mountain Bike trails that connect to the Katy trail. They are located between Weldon Spring and Augusta.

Many biking enthusiasts love to travel the trail in the fall to observe the changing of the leaves. There is also various forms of wildlife to observe. Bikers also have to be ready for the weather. Many times it is possible to run into a thunderstorm or severe weather. The middle of the summer can provide some very hot days. It is usually the months of May, September, and October for the best time to travel. However, riders should be prepared all the time for the unusual. It is recommended to carry plenty of water and a cell phone as well as a first aid kit. The trail although paved in some areas, is mainly made up of crushed rocks.

Still the trip is self can be very enjoyable. The scenery is breathtaking in many places. Each little village or town has something unique to provide. There are even winery's that you can visit along the way. There are grocery stores, restrooms, vending machines, campsites, bike shops, shuttle service, parking areas, water coolers, pay phones, bike rentals, restaurants, motels, and points of interest.
